Well I'm planning on having a crack at a SpeedMod kernel transplant this weekend so all going well, I should be fair hurtling whilst using no electricity at all. Sounds most excellent. Assuming the nifty-swifty new kernel will play nicely with the rest of the JPY elements natch.

So, any news about the GB ROMs rumoured to be leaking into the hands of the XDA devs? I know the lads and lasses need the source to be able to do anything useful with 2.3/4 but I've yet to see anything that gives me hope for an OS upgrade in the near term.

I've got Doc's 9.6 I believe and it had JPY firmware. If you wanna check turn wifi off and back on, then type:

adb shell
dmesg | grep Firmware

It will either have June 4 or November 16 date, June 4 is the 'fixed' version.

Mmm, think you might have forgotten a few pertinent details (for those that aren't as savy). Are you using Terminal Emulator to type those two lines?

I just tried. adb shell returns "not found", typing su first to get Super User access and then typing adb shell results in the same.

And when you turn Wifi off, then off again, do actually have to be connected?

Don't forget to put back the other update.zip file. If you ever find yourself up the creek without a padle having that update.zip file will prove to be extremely valuable :)

If you have time to explain that, I'd be grateful. I figured the previous update.zip was a version of cwm but obviously not. I still have it (just changed the extension to 'old' from 'zip') and the update.zip is still on the sd card although I don't know if it's needed there after the cwm recovery has been flashed.

Any info will be entirely welcome.

It's just a safety net. If something untoward goes on, then you know you can flash the signed update.zip file from 2e recovery to get yourself CWM. Then all the magic happens with CWM recovery.

Provided you've got a back up you'll be able to restore that and you'll be away laughing. Otherwise it could end in tears, and a full flash using Odin back to stock - which isn't all bad. Every once in a while it's probably good to give the phone a jolly good clean out after all the flashing backwards and forwards :)

So if I'm reading you corectly, the update.zip file must be 'signed' to work with 3e recovery (which my new one may not be because I had a crippled 2e recovery before I upgraded it and even a crippled 2e will presumably flash an unsigned update.zip? Which leaves me wondering, how do I get my hands on a known 'signed' update.zip with cwm so I know it will flash using the 3e standard recovery following a return to stock?

My head hurts...

Yup...

Then just type those commands into the windows command line. If you're using a stock rom you'll definitely have the JPY wifi firmware R2D2. If you dont have the android sdk neets get it here.

Extract is somewhere like c:\android. Then open a command line (cmd.exe) type cd c:\android\platform-tools and then type the commands.

EDIT: You probably could just use terminal emulator although adb is bloody handy sometimes. Try in the emulator:

su

dmseg | grep Firmware > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt

Can't test it as my emulator just force closes and no you dont have to be connected to a wifi network. Just off and on.

I'm thinking more and more that it is hardware related. :(

get the "signal refresh" app u wont need to resart ph this way...i used it when i was on voda losing signal....

When you're in 2e recovery you can only flash an update.zip file. Grab the one on Doc's thread, it's in the 2 or 3 post.

Use the Update.zip file in 3e recovery, then you'll get CWM recovery where you can flash any zip file, not just one that's called "update.zip"

If your 2e was crippled, did you have to flash a stock firmware in Odin? All Eclair roms have 2e (you can only flash a signed update.zip file). Froyo comes with 3e which is where the trouble is, and why you need to flash a kernel in Odin (that gives you the ability to get to CWM recovery) or apply the update.zip file that will install the CWM recovery.

So, let me see if I have this right, this is what the line should be:
adb shell
dmesg | grep Firmware > /mnt/sdcard/dmesg.txt

After typing adb shell <enter> I get:
$
Which is what you'd get in Terminal Emulator after typing (in lower case) su <enter>
If the answer is yes, I get diddly squat.

If you got 3e recovery any update.zip needs to be signed by samsung, which wont be happening. 2e is the one that doesnt require signed zips. So you're right you'd have to flash a kernel through odin to get back either 2e or CWM.
