I'd try re-downloading your rom from the kitchen. Pretty sure this has been discussed on xda before.

I'm assuming you used a wipe rom?

And re-download your theme again too.

Which theme did you flash?

R64, which is what I already had on the phone, but actually I think initially I flashed the stock theme, then put the R64 over the top.

Did you not see the warning at the top of the theme section of the rom generator? Or perhaps forgot?

Flash back to stock theme. It might not solve your issue, but its where I'd start.

Definitely see if now !!!

Didn't at the time....maybe they should put it in red.

It was going to be only temporary but JVK came along and took their attention.

There could be a FAQ somewhere, but I am running stock ROM/Firmware whatever on my Galaxy and I feel a little left out.

Its partly laziness on my part, the size of this thread (its nearly growing faster than I can read lol) and partly the complexity.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me:

Samsung: Make the phone obviously
Android/Google: Make the operating system? ie Froyo 2.2 Etc?
Samsung: Make the firmware?

So when you guys talk about these custom roms, are we talking about, the operating system, if you use the PC as an analogy?

When you talk about JP this and that - what are you refering to? I am just trying to get my head around how it all fits together.

I love my Android and just about find something new about it every day. I like I not know that in terms of the SD port it only has a Class 6 (or was it 4) port - so dont get a class 10 SD card - no point!

In a rough analogy to the PC, the firmware is the BIOS and as you have worked out, Android is the operating system. Android is based on a unix style kernel, smallish in itself but with additional functionality provided by extensions. The kernel is the core element of the operating system.

As far as the capital letter ROM codes, those are unique to Samsung and they describe the region, series and release period which just keeps them trackable for Sammy's update process ("what update process?" you ask...

)

There's bound to be a wiki that explains in more detail although I read the ROM stuff on XDA (before even buying my SGS) and have found no actual use for it besides ensuring that I can compare my existing ROM with that which I think may better work for me.

The other regularly discussed stuff is about the kernel itself, and the numbers bandied about here and elsewhere refer to arbitrary choices made by the coders (eg Doc and Darkyy) who modify the kernel for various reasons, including performance, stability, and additional functionality over the original 'vanilla' kernels.

And if I'm mistaken about the foregoing, somebody will jump in to correct me, without a shadow of a doubt.

The custom ROMs we talk about are all based on Samsung's firmware releases which include everything needed to run the phone including a specific version of Android. Typically the "chefs" will cook up a rom by deodexing the files in the operating system to allow for modifications such as themes and optimising speed by removing files intended for other resolutions. The other thing they often do is provide a customised kernel that supports such things as extra filesystems (ext4 for speed & stability), improved image quality, improved sound quality.

So basically if you want to have different themes (and this is for the status bar, notification bar etc) and also want extra speed, better image quality and better sound quality then there is going to be a custom ROM that will fit you.

Typically if you start with a stock 2.1 ROM it's pretty easy to upgrade to a custom ROM and you never have to use Kies or even Odin again (unless things go pear shaped).

This guide tells you how to do a clean install - it would pay to read through all of the different options. if it gets confusing you can ask here.

As fahrenheit so helpfully pointed out I couldn't use JPJ v10 with R64 theme, so I ended up using JS8 v9.9.5 in the end, I like the R64 theme and wanted to stick with that.

Ah true I like the R64 theme too. I'm running XWJS8 9.9.5 also. I've had a few issues with audio/video refusing to play and a little bit of lag also. I think the lag may be due to using the Swype beta instead of the built in Swype, either that or because I have like 130 apps.

I agree quite like R64 theme. I am running V10 (ZSJPJ) and BAT LE theme, the theme is not too bad.

I'm a bit of a noob, but say I bung a Vodafone SIM in it I'd be good to go?

Yep, Vodafone and 2degrees are fully compatible with it. XT will work in some areas(built up areas), but you'll be good to go with a Voda sim.
