i stuffed up my phone recently (was trying to cwm flash random themes and bootanims and hacks) and managed to brick the thing (crashed on boot then ha to pull battery, risky on ext2 - then got the dreaded "mobile phone.. !...computer" error screen)

would not recover with ODIN 1.3, but finally got it back using ODIN 1.7 thank god.

i had a recent titanium backup done luckily so after getting it back to stock i decided to take the plunge, installed stock JVK to check it out. immediately felt the pinch - firstly the new CWM3 would not flash old CWM zips, saying they werent compatible. stock gingerbread theme is pretty yuck, launcher is crap. no extended recovery menu. lots of niggling things that i took for granted after running a fully tweaked darky rom for so long. i then tried about 5 different combinations of roms from Doc's ROM kitchen. different kernels, and setups. all were OK but nothing really was cohesive enough, and the kernels he has supported are all in ultra-beta mode really, so wasnt that impressed.

then in a stroke of lucky coincidence darky released his v10 RC3 gingerbread build so, full flash again to stock JVK with bootloaders, custom kernel, and then RC3. spent rest of weekend setting it up. decided on ADW launcher EX to take over from the no-longer-supported GTG touchwiz that i loved.

very pleased with the result - runs reasonably fast, and with the tweaks in this rom build, it is alot more pleasant to use. did not have luck on XT network using JVE modem, it didnt want to know about 850mhz - so back to JL2 modem, which is rock solid. 1500+ on quadrant with basic lagfix on system only (not as fast as Speedmod on full ext2 filesystem which was getting me in excess of 2000 on quadrant) but still very good.

almost all apps work sweet, and im sure there will be further tweaks to this rom build soon - anyway for those on XT or indeed anyone who has been curious about this, ive run this rom for about 2 days now and its a goody. all i did to tweak further was install AOSP lockscreen as i hate the stupid "glass" lockscreen. the only thing i can complain about is the lack of sensitivity with the touch screen - it seeems to need a firmer press than the old Froyo builds - multitouch performance is a known issue so expect this area to be addressed soon

What app are you using for the above image? I've never known how people can tell how many satellites they can see with the phone. But I don't have any special GPS on my phone. Cheers

how did everyone get on with their "best shields ever" skins for there she's?

mine is still going strong, the screen protector alone is still flawless. and its been in and out my pocket 1000's of times.

I *still* haven't done mine. Was all geared up to do it and then we had the earthquake and there's stuff in the air and I'm a bit pedantic about having a lint free environment before I do it. Now I'm just suffering from lack of sleep and inability to be patient enough to get it perfect, and it needs to be perfect (for me). I'll procrastinate a little longer, what harm can there be ;-)

And no, I haven't tried it. But I would if I had no other option of breathing life back into my phone.

Nope, but I did ask (in the romkitchen chat room) if it was an April Fools thing. And I checked the date of the post and it was dated yesterday, not the 1st. So it clearly says in there it's a joke? Well don't I feel stupid. Sorry if it was a joke. Didn't mean to mislead, or get anyone's hopes up.

We're none of us immune. It's a great thought that we could recover bricked hardware (well maybe that should read semi-bricked, because bricked really means 'never to be resuscitated' which is... well, final), so we're inclined to let our wishes overrule our reason.

And if we humans weren't prone to that, there'd be no religion.
