If you really like the Darky theme you should pull the Framework-res, Systemui, Twframework, android.policy.jar and Framework.jar and chuck them in a cwm3 file or get another cwm3 theme file and replace the insides with these files. Just a suggestion :)

lokhor: I stuffed up my firmware yesterday by flashing the GTO cam fix and then my camera would not work at all. I ended up flashing Simply Honey 3.6 which has Speedmod K15G. K15G has some issues with not waking up from sleep due to it's conservative governor. Tonight I'm going to try the version with the ondemand governor and also may try Talon's OC/UV kernel.

Dark core is now at ver 2.5 (now with vodoo colour and voodoo sound v9) giving you something else to add to the list! Good luck!

tbh I'm not a big fan of Darky's roms or kernel. I only picked Simply Honey because it seems to be the least bastardized of the lot and now has Speedmod which was always the best Froyo kernel. I'm still annoyed that Romkitchen has not brought out customisable Gingerbread roms.

- Flash JM8 via Odin
- Flash JVK (either via Odin, or maybe using Kies because I live on the edge!)
- Flash Speedmod K15G via Odin
- Flash SimplyHoney via CWM

Any comments on ROM/Kernel choice are welcome! I may just use the stock ROM with a custom kernel for a while?

as mentioned, all you need is a GB rom with bootloaders, after that feel free to CWM flash anything else over the top

best choice would be to flash darky's 10.1 odin rom, repartition ticked, use the PIT file etc, to get a clean GB base. then flash simplyhoney over the top - since the latest one v3.6 comes with speedmod kernel already its saved you a step. so thats 2 flashes and youre all done. daresay its faster and easier then Kies.

EDIT: id wait a few days for 3.6.1 which is due in a few days as hes fixing a few small rotation bugs and more importantly the homescreen/background/lockscreen bug which sounds annoying (due to him adding 9 lockscreens! jeepers!). so might as well wait for a fully tweaked version - im trying to find out if his definitely has the non-increasing ringtone dialer cus i hate that 'feature' from samsung...

If I am on Darky's 9.5 you are recommending to first upgrade to Darky's 10.1 or 10.1 resurrection edition found here

Thanks for all the advice guys - I'm now on SimplyHoney 3.6 - quite impressed so far! I had a wee hair-tearing moment after flashing back to JFD though - I couldn't get back into 3-button recovery or download! I was really starting to get worried after I rooted it and even Quickboot wouldn't do it. Not sure what the story was, but adb reboot download did the trick - flashed the resurrection ROM and then SH from CWM.

Next question - when restoring my apps from TB, can I restore 3rd party apps + data, and just not system apps+data? Or can I not restore any data from my previous Froyo build?

I especially like the camera on the stock firmware. The night mode can take a pic in all but total darkness. The panorama mode us awesome. The camera alone would keep me on this ROM.

So are there any custom roms that include there Samsung camera?

Most of the custom roms are based on stock roms so they have the Samsung camera, only CM7 based roms do not have it.

I know you wrote "custom ROMs", but I have 'upgraded' to a stock VF compatible ROM, JVH, which has the stock GB camera app including night mode and panorama, if that's any help.

You could prolly upgrade to JVH, back up the camera app, then flash whatever ROM tickles your fancy and side-load the saved camera app. The only reason I haven't made the obvious suggestion that you just use your JPY version is that I have no idea if it would still work with GB.

Somebody else might know that though...

Was attempting to flash Hardcore's K15H-T2 today when Odin failed for some reason, and left me with the dreaded b---!---8 soft-brick. . . .

Good to know that you can still have heart-stopping, trouser-soiling moments after all this time!

Yup, heart stopping moment indeed. Had Odin fail when trying to flash stock JVH including boot-loaders yesterday. Pulled out the battery and tried again and success.

I'm glad it's so difficult to brick the SGS. I have had boot-loops several times in the last few days trying to get alternative themes working on Simply Honey 3.6 as the default theme has issues with displaying certain things. I have been struggling as D7 Google Reader requires permissions from your Google account and the prompt for them won't display with the default theme. Will see if it's fixed in his release tomorrow otherwise may go back to Juwe's rom. One the bright side I am enjoying Hardcore's Speedmod K15H-T2. Has anyone tried out Talon's kernel? it looks like it has quite a few features including OC/UV.

this is a good question and one ive struggled to learn the hard way as to how to best use it

i used to always 'back up everything' then 'restore everything' in TB so this would back up all system apps as well and then restore them again. this was fine when going from froyo to froyo but then i quickly realised when i was upgrading to newer froyo and then GB that i was inadvertantly restoring old froyo system apps over the top of my fresh GB and was dragging old versions of system apps forward with me

its widely mentioned that its best to only restore new User Apps only without data, as certain builds seem to not like the old data carried forward. so this is the safest option.

right now i make it a point to back up all user apps + data, then only back up critical phone data like my SMS and contacts history, bookmarks, and stuff like that. and then restore carefully so i dont overwrite new system apps accidentally. its only in certain cases like where im using a custom email.apk etc, that it gets confusing whats backed up and what to restore. i try as much as possible to avoid restoring data unless really necessary

I have tried a few custom gingerbread roms (darky 10.1, Juwe 4.3.1 and Simply Honey 3.5).
Currently using deodexed stock JVH with a custom theme and dark core 2.5. In my experience I haven't noticed any real improvements the custom roms have over deodexed stock JVH.

Hard to say from my point-of-view, as I've only just gone to GB as per my sig below. With all due respect to the other ROM cooks, I don't think any of them delve as deep into the code as Doc does (did?).

I'm pretty impressed so far though, so it will interesting to see how the various approaches develop over time. My phone seems very smooth, browsing is so much nicer than 2.2. Battery life doesn't seem as good, but this will probably catch up with kernel development too.
