3.6 was not a good choice, all the bug reports on the thread confirmed as much - he let that one slip i think

i stay away from all new releases until the early adopters post up good results first...

I have to say, after two days of use, 3.6 is faultless for me - damn quick and smooth, and no lag - although to be fair i don't have a heap of apps on my phone.

The only problem with 3.6 is that the theme has issues with displaying certain things properly. if you use any apps that need to request permissions from your google account they won't work as it doesn't display. BeyondPod and D7 Google Reader face this issue. 3.6.1 fixes it though.

Hi
Can anyone suggest a simple step by step method to update a Samsung Galaxy on telecom XT to Gingerbread.
I have updated to Froyo using Tony Hughes post using Odin which I found fairly straight forward & would be keen to take the next step but i'm lost with all this info re kernals, ROM,S. modem, etc etc
i guess all i want to know is the shortest & most reliable way

- Root your phone so you can access /efs with root explorer, and take a backup of that directory
- Backup all your apps/data with Titanium Backup (also requires root)
- Remove any lagfixes if you have any
- Flash Ficeto's Resurrection ROM from here. This is important, as it will give you the Gingerbread bootloaders.
- Flash a GB ROM of your choice (Simply Honey/Juwe's etc)
- Restore your apps/data, but NOT system apps

My current setup is in my sig, and I've had no issues whatsoever - if you're on telecom, you will need a differernt modem though.

JL2 and KC1 seem to be the modems of choice for Telecom, they work very well.

Quick question, can someone give me a detailed step by step instructions on how to get this theme (see below) onto my standard JVH firmware from http://www.samfirmware.com (European Version) [used ODIN to get to Froyo and then GB]

These are the instructions from the XDA forum:

Instructions for XWJVH Roms:
1. Flash XWJVH
2. Boot into Rom
3. Clear Cache & Dalvik Cache
4. Flash GalaxIIv7XWJVH_Package1.zip
5. Reboot
6. Reboot to Recovery
7. Clear Dalvik Cache
8. Flash GalaxIIv7XWJVH_Package2.zip
8. Reboot.

Specifically interested if I do need to root my phone to make this work or there is a workaround (if so, instruction please :-)).

On above instructions:
What is Dalvik Cache, and how do you clear it :-O
How do you flash a file, people talk about CWM as an option or renaming package into update.zip and then running it in Recovery Mode from the SD Card. Can this be done without an SD card, or this is the only way [still haven't got one, but looking...]

Also, can someone in more lamers terms explain what are the consequences of rooting your phone and if this can be undone (how?), specifically around warranty and likelihood of bricking it...

Thanks in advance for your understanding, as I am probably not the first (and probably not last) to ask such questions....

On a separate note, what are the differences between JVH and say JV4 or JV5 - don't seem to be able to find anything explaining the naming conventions and what comes after what (e.g. presumed JV is a family of firmwares and last digit/letter represent sub-version of some sort)???

to upgrade to GB you will need to
1) use ODIN to flash a base GB rom that includes bootloaders, like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792

2) flash a telecom XT compatible modem, either UGJL2 (older) or UGKC1 (newer), both have been tried, tested and proven to be very good with XT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391

at this point youre done, running a plain vanilla gingerbread rom. if you then want to flash a CUSTOM GB rom, you can choose from any of the multitude of roms on the XDA forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665
simple rule of thumb, if its on page 1 or 2 its being actively used and worked on - if its on page 3 or further, dont bother.

it seems the most recommended ones are Juwes Rom, Simply Honey, Darky's, etc. but i would get used to plain vanilla GB before you start farting around with custom kernels and whatnot

youre more or less on the right track, the "JV_" series of builds currently refer to gingerbread, the last letter differentiates the different builds that have been released - the numerical ones you mentioned are region-specific builds of the same base build.

and i believe that the releases are not always in alphabetical order... ie i wouldnt necessarily assume the higher the alphabet the better...

JHV GB Update.

Home screen issues mentioned in my last post have been resolved by reverting to TW wallpaper. It seems this ROM and Launcher Pro aren't playing nicely, the LP wallpapers having the display behaviour I mentioned.

So one issue sorted (well, worked around) and 2 to go. I'm happy with the level of touch sensitivity I'm experiencing, in fact prefer it to the screen being overly sensitive, so that's a non-issue.

WiFi performance is worse, as evidenced by the WiFi Analyzer app. Whereas before, I could depend on a best case of -65, my best case is now -70. That's something I'd like to fix but needs a different ROM I suspect.

GPS is a mixed bag. I get a lock to 10 metres inside my office but it takes longer than it used to (~13 seconds on average). I also had the GPS warning bar appear in Navigon while I was testing on Sunday, and that's the first time that's happened. Only one occurrence, but still...

So, the radios are not working as well with this ROM. I'll keep it running for a while longer to see how the battery use pans out, which appeared to be about a third less than under JPY, but seems to be better over the last couple of days. A few here have made that observation also, suggesting that the phone's battery calibration takes a few cycles to optimise. We shall see I guess.

A question for the technorati... Since I'm running GB now, my flash must have contained the Gingerbread specific bootloader? Yes? No?

If you used Kies or a stock rom with Odin it would have contained the Gingerbread bootloaders.

Regarding the reception, you could try a different modem - BUJV3 is the GB Vodafone modem which may perform better. You will need a kernel with CWM 2.5 or 3.0 support though. There is also an app called GPS Aids which requires root but can enhance GPS performance. I don't think 13 seconds is anything to complain about though.

Regarding battery life, if you go to Settings > About Phone > Battery Use
You may be able to see what is using your battery life as this screen has been improved from Froyo. There is a known issue with the Android OS process running rampant on GB 2.3.3 after certain apps start. Unfortunately some of the built in Samsung apps cause this to occur (Software Update and Mobile Tracker to name a few). The only known way to resolve it is to reboot.

Re: the bootloaders – maybe. . . . .I did quite a bit of reading on this, and while it’s possible to flash GB without the GB-specific bootloaders, it’s certainly not advisable. The symptoms of doing this are a) no download mode and b) a lot of graphical glitches. The bootloaders must be backwards-compatible though, as there doesn’t seem to be any issue going back to Froyo or Éclair once you have them.

Furthermore, flashing the bootloaders by themselves is a dodgy business, as you’re exposing yourself (ooh-er!) to a high level of risk if the flash fails – by flashing as part of a ROM, you’re also including the secondary bootloaders etc that give you download mode, so if it fails, you can at least just reflash.

I’d second everything Lokhor said too – I’ve gone back to BUJV3 from XXJVO and it’s better on battery, and just as good (so far) on signal strength. For GPS, don’t uninstall AngryGPS like I did, as this has taken the place of LBSTestMode.

Yep, used Odin to load the stock JVH ROM. So I'm assuming I can pretty much flash over stock with my mod of choice (when I've finished researching it). And yes, I used Chainfire to root, so I have CWM 3.0 support. :-)

I'll try GPS Aid and see if that improves things. 13 secs not 'bad' per sé, but it's worse than it was (~6 seconds at times) and I was hoping better would be the result of the update. And I'd really rather not go back to Froyo if I can get GB up to speed.

Android System and Android OS were both originally using a greater percentage of battery but they've dropped to 4% and 2% now, which suggests to me that there was a period where the OS was caching and sorting behind the scenes. Biggest battery hog is now the screen which is currently 70%+, something that always happens early in the day for me since I'm catching up on emailing, checking RSS and SMS, and reading my news apps. By day's end, it'll be closer to 60%.

If the phone gets back to 40 hours from a charge, I'll be delighted. We'll see. :-)

Download mode is definitely there, so I'm assuming the GB specific bootloaders installed with the stock JVH ROM. W00t! So now I can start "shopping" for my next ROM - keen on getting something with SpeedMod and a decent battery icon, as well as 'proper' WiFi strength and GPS goodness like JPY. The rest isn't much of a concern.

I wondered about AngryGPS as well, but found out that it has the same functions as the LBS doohickey, so I've been using it for my testing. Didn't know that LBS had been deleted tho' so I appreciate the heads-up.

GPS Aids (interesting name...) has dropped the time to lock from ~13 seconds average, to between 8 and 11 seconds. So it's "aided" the lock time a small amount but is still well shy of how things were in 2.2.3. It was worth a crack though. So thanks for the suggestion folks.
