The old double-edged sword - It's almost like there has to be two phones in one;

Phone one is the "Just works" nirvana for the Apple type customer
Phone two is a 'turbocharged' version that lets the inveterate experimenter fill his or her boots (Neets to respond in 3... 2... 1...) :D

All with the push of a button.

Probably never happen quite like that but I think the prospect of a simpler process to select what you want to run is such an obvious thing that it'll come to pass in some form before long.

Then the punters can feel safe while wallowing in cool and savvy and the geeks can customise to their hearts' content in a single Android phone.

Oh well, a bloke can dream.

If Android had a system for changing themes built in (like Bada does) then I think a lot of people would be satisfied with the stock rom. Some people will always want to hack just to tweak things and see how they can be improved though.

I think someone here should make a Telecom compatible ROM, it's not that difficult - really, just assemble the various elements and follow the tutorial on XDA for making the tar files. I can't I do not have a compatible SGS.

Android will always be fragmented - just like the PC is. And just as well; it has certain advantages as far as protecting our rights goes (can't program in too many lock downs and lock outs).

The iphone is a great piece of hardware - pity it is owned by Apple, who must be one of the most litigious control freak companies around.

I explain it like this to my clients:

Android is what you want if you want the freedom to customise, tweak, and modify your phone to perfection. The price is study and time.

You want an Iphone if you just want it to look pretty good out of the box, are happy with a one-size-fits-all paradigm.

I may further explain that the iphone does not allow battery changes (effectively limiting it's lifetime to 18 to 30 months before the battery becomes a problem. That it does not have true multi-tasking, antennagate, itunes lock in, etc. I may also explain androids fragmentation, buggyness, lack of polish in a few areas, rising popularity, often lower build quality, etc.

The thing is 'making' a Telecom rom would be getting a good deodexed Froyo rom (JPY,JS8) slapping a modem on there then done but then why not just use the Rom Kitchen? I think all the resources are there we just need a set guide(All so explaining what things are too) for upgrading to both Froyo and Gingerbread and have a bit of a pros and cons chart for them both. Just some thoughts....

It'd be kinda cool if Sammy did a BMW-style build-to-order for the phone.

On your phone, run the BTO app which presents you with the available mods, ranging from bog-standard through a couple of steps to the 'M' class option, each with its loosening of the restraints until you get your full-on rooted, speed-modded, customised 'M' model.

Tap the appropriate selection, and the phone downloads the necessary firmware via wifi or data, puts the phone into recovery automagically, then reboots into your chosen modded state.

That would be cool, and being from Samsung, would likely ease the pucker factor for those less brave than Neets. I mean less brave than others of us.

Could happen. Maybe. Possibly...

Okay, maybe not. Perhaps the XDA Devs can come up with something that Apple-simple for us. It can't be that hard. And no, my skills aren't up to anything that system-centric, so it won't be me, unfortunately.

There's sure a feeling of accomplishment in phone modding that's hard to beat, after the anxiety attack finally diminishes enough to allow you to resume breathing. :D

A manufacturer-supported 'souping up' app would certainly open the device to a wider range of Androiders (is there such a word?) though, while delivering the hand-holding experience that the less adventurous buyer would want. (Apple people for instance).

Factory enabled over-clocking doesn't seem a probable Samsung-supported option, yet manufacturers like Gigabyte build that stuff into their motherboards for PCs and supply apps to make the process as safe and pain-free as possible. So while unlikely Sammy will ever deliver, it's certainly not impossible. I won't hold my breath though.

Woo looks like we're going to see 2.3.4 soon :) The darky crew seemed to have got their hands on a copy! Wonder how buggy it will be!!!

Looks like the rom kitchen guys are expecting 2.3.4 too.

Just wondering how those on GB are finding battery life? 48 hours off charge as of this morning with:

- HSDPA running fulltime
- Wifi use at night (off when screen is off)
- Gmail syncing
- A bit of web browsing
- Lot of listening to music on 3
- Several appbrain syncs/app updates
- A few reboots/quadrant tests
- General txting etc

Still have 19% left. . . . .very impressive.

keen as for this - because DamianGTO's kernel just went gold, as well - hes ironed out all the bugs, and we got a stable kernel now - im on his RC1 kernel on Darkys 10.1 now and things are excellent

its definitely up there aye. on my most recent run i had HSDPA on half the time, wifi on all the time (sleep on screen off), did a ton of browsing on web, lots of syncing and using my exchange email for work, and couple games incl 20min session on robodefence lol, almost 4hours screen on time, etc - got 2 days 22hours 53mins at 3% remaining... so thats over 70hours!

the real benefits come from deepsleep drain overnight, the GTO kernel really conserves battery when youre not using it. all this despite being overclocked to 1.2gig, bloody awesome

Hey Brendan.

Cheers for your help. I forgot to mention It won't go into download mode. Tried volume down,up,center - This is what led me toorder a jig.

I'll try it again though with the battery out for a few mins.

Appreciate the help!

I think you don't realy need a jig
try this.....
remove the battery and plugin the usb
start odin now press all the 3 buttons ( volume down, power,center button )
now keeping all the 3button pressed push the battery in
that's it you should be in download mode.

Darkys have the stock 2.3.4 available now & Darkcore 2.7.1.

All I can say is Holy S!#t it is fast. There forum is full of people saying the same thing.

They are currently working on there custom rom.

This is the best my phone has ever been!!

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.
