If there's a "Search thread" option here, I can't find it, so I'll just leave this here.

Turns out there's a firmware update for -just- the camera that's applicable to the NZ new models of SGS2, the updater is in the Samsung Appstore progam. I just updated my camera firmware from OCED11 to OCEE09.

No idea what the difference is, they wouldn't usually do such a specific update unless it does _something_ useful though.

Just search in the samsung appstore app for "camera" and it should pop up. The update takes a fair while. I've not used the camera yet so I've no point of reference.

"Class 2 and 4 cards have better random access speed and random read/write than class 6 or 10 cards in general. To get higher sequential write speeds, manufacturers sacrifice the random access speeds. That's just how it is.
The best all around card I've ever found is Sandisk class 4.
My 32gb Sandisk class 4 outperforms any other class 10 or 2 32gb card I've tested in the random access and random read/write speeds. That's what's most important when using with WP7 or Android when using it for apps or OS files that need to be accessed quickly. Class 6 and 10 cards are setup to initialize the area of the card that is about to be used to make the sequential write/read quicker, but it takes extra time in the beginning to do the initialization. If your using the card where you need to access small bits of info from various parts of card quickly, you will do best with class 2 or 4.
Most people seem to assume that the higher the class, the better the card is for everything, but that's not how it is. Different purposes need different kinds of speed... cards with higher sequential speeds have lower random speeds."

So I’ve been thinking (as you do). Is there any reason, given the low cost of flash memory, that smartphone manufacturers couldn’t include a standalone recovery ROM chip in their phones that contain a factory-default firmware. If you managed to hard-brick your phone by Odin/Kies crashing while overwriting your bootloaders, or flashing the wrong bootloader so the PBL/SBL no longer matched, you could depress a small reset button inside the phone case (paperclip style) which copied the read-only contents of the chip back to your NAND, effectively giving you a hard factory restore?

As long as there was no physical damage to the PCB/chips themselves, and you’re not relying on the USB connector, is there any reason this wouldn’t work? It just seems like a good, cost-effective way to give you reliability – sure, you’d lose all your data, but sending it back to Samsung, and having them do a JTAG restore would amount to the same thing.

The whole reason for having two bootloaders is to avoid the majority of bootloader flashing issues. If you encounter problems while flashing boot.bin (the PBL), the phone should attempt to use the SBL on the next boot.

There aren't many ways to get into a state where both bootloaders are gone:
1) Flashing a firmware file where both bootloaders are corrupt.
2) Having the flashing process die after flashing the second of the 2 bootloaders, then having it die next time around flashing the first.

Either way, it costs money to add the additional ROM chip, and it's only there to work around a rarely occurring issue. The only way that Samsung (or any other phone maker) will add in the safety ROM is if the cost of repairing bad phones is greater than that of adding the chip.

Inconvenient, but economically sound.

hey just got my galaxy s 2, and when i plugged it into kies i got " this version of the device cannot be updated" what should i do? i'm running 2.3.3 XXKDJ i have no idea if this is the latest one or not?
only just joined android from nokia so not really that savy yet with what is better

any help would be appreciated!

Where do you clear the caches? Cleared the memory in the task manager

Boot the phone into recovery mode (long press the power button and select Recovery) and there is the normal cache, with the dalvik cache stashed the next level down under advanced. It's apparently good practice to clear both before flashing, but I haven't yet...

Anyway, clear them and reboot. If that doesn't work try reflashing the Rom. If that still doesn't work (won't take long) ask a question on the Lite'ning Rom XDA thread.

Ok, I did a reset (as Samsung Dive was finding my phone due to SIM swaps) and it fixed the Menu and Buttons not lighting up issue. I've also noticed by battery life is a lot better after the Lite'ning 1.4 flash as well

Probably means there's no update available for that particular version of the SGS2. I can't see any reference to XXKDJ on samfirmware.com, is this the last part of the "Build number" in the "About" screen of settings?

The "latest" firmware ends in KE7, KE8 or KF1 (depending who you ask), so yours is bit older (late April\early May) if that version is correct.

What's the output from typing *#1234# in the dialer?

Correct. XEU is the code for "Generic European" firmware, and it's usually the one you want. (Displays the most apps in the Samsung appstore).

Your firmware is the KE7 build from May 18, there's only been 1 update of merit since then and no-one seems to have said much about it, so I wouldn't worry too much.

The CSC for the NZ SGS2's is VNZ, so Vodafone NZ get their very own CSC (Customer Sales Code). You can change this to XEU by editing the /system/csc/sales_code.dat file with root explorer (or by using adb) and just change the code in there, then reboot the phone. It can help to wipe the data for the Samsung Apps and Marketplace apps to force a database rebuild against the new CSC.

They also benefit from using MarketEnabler to fake your MCC/MNC SIM ID as being from a different country - I've often got mine set to Telstra in Australia as more things pop up in the marketplace (such as the very useful "Navigon" GPS application)

Is anyone having poor wifi performance? just picked my phone up this week and 5 meters from my router the signal drops to Poor and will not connect in the bedroom 8 meters away. All other devices get a very good signal in the bedroom.

From a google search a number of other users are having the same issue.

The WiFi antenna appears to be at the bottom ot the phone, somewhere near the capacitive buttons. If you hold that end of the phone you'll get a weaker signal than if you hold the top. Makes life a bit hard if you're holding the phone in portrait orientation, but not so bad in landscape.

Thanks, I'd consider not getting a connection pretty bad. I did drop into the vodafone store and tested with their router with a better being had with clear line of sight. My router is a Netgear DGN3500, only a few months old, possibly its this that is causing the issue.

having looked back thru this thread i see a few others also reporting the same issue.
