But I could do that on Orange in the UK in the early 90's with only one SIM and a bog standard Nokia. I had two numbers on the one card. Why can't we just do that? Or can you have 4 on a dual sim?

You cant pull one of the numbers out and stick it in a junk phone for when you are going out to a place where theft is a problem, you cant run the 2 numbers on different networks to ensure you are more accessible if they are on one sim card from the same telco either. Cant have both a prepay and a postpay plan to get the best of both. Many reasons for a multi sim phone.

It feels like i'm the only one.

I cant say with great certaincy, but it used to be that cellular security was poor back in the 90's. With modulation and encryption done in older techniques. Sim cards could be cloned and all sorts of no good could be had. Now days cards can only carry one number (that i know of) for security reasons and have almost full protected encryption (at least to the point of trying being way too much effort).

Not all N7's are dual SIM - the model sold here has a 'hybrid' tray that has dedicated slots for SIM card and memory card. The two receptacle slots are completely different shapes.

Dual SIM models are manufactured but only sold in 'selected countries'.

Your idea/comment that you might be able to 'jam' two SIM cards into one slot 'if you're careful enough' sounds bizarre - how/why do you think you could do that?

This post has quite a bit of misleading information

For a start the mobile number (MSISDN) is not even on the SIM card but in the HLR / CSDB and SIM card contains the IMSI and some SIMs can contain multiple IMSI's

No jamming 2 SIMs into a note7 that is just stupid like those taking a 3.5mm drill and trying to add a plug for headphones on the iPhone7,

Is it just the tray that is unique, or the internals? ie can you put a dual SIM tray in a normal Note to make it dual SIM?

Also, why the country restriction?

It's more than the SIM tray for sure, look at the contacts on a micro SD card and contact points on a SIM card

Also different firmware from my understanding (not 100% sure however)

I.e. load the firmware from NZ on one and it will stop the dual sim
