Update on JB progress:

Headphones working on some ROM variants, so that's a plus - only a matter of re-compiling to incorporate fix into the kang I'm following.

Microphone doesn't seem to be working for any JB alpha as yet, but there are half a dozen or more devs working on that issue. Once solved, that will mean the in-call audio will be active and the phone will make and receive voice calls. Also, Google Now doesn't work for the same mic-related reasons - however, it functions if you type your query.

Various graphics bugs are being squashed one at a time, and FCs are being sorted as they show up.

Still a ways to go, but getting closer. Don't recommend trying out the alphas unless your Sensation is a spare phone.

I didn't get the "buttery smooth" improvement on mine when I tried JB, but it's still alpha, and TBH, my Sensation is really smooth anyway.

More to come when there's further progress.

The problem is, at site says :

"Q: Is it required to have a rooted device?
A: Yes. You need to have a rooted device for this ROM. "

Problem IS.....the next step for me was to actually DO the root-ing.
I am using this guide :

I am at step 2.
the interesting thing is, I downloaded a PG58IMG file that was 16mb. all the others are about 4.5mb!
I looked in the zip of the PG58IMG that I initally downloaded, and it had a load of files like "radio" and some others, it didnt have the "recovery" image in it like all the others.

I am totally confused....and really ashamed to have to o back to my Vodafon 858....got stick at work :-) :-(

Does recovery on your phone allow you to do a factory restore? If so, do it so you have a working phone.

Let us know how that works out then we'll tackle the rest.

I have "Factory Reset" - is that the same as facotry restore?

my menu items are for HBoot:

Fast boot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Simloc

Ok, its now showing me a "$ext" recovery touch screen.
Its trying to get stuff of my SDcard....it cant now I have a menu...

Reboot now
Toggle usb storage
wipe/format
backup|restore
mount/storage
tools
info
power menu

This is the 4EXT Recovery touch menu.

I dont have my SD card in the phone at the moment, its in my laptop.

Does this mean I need to put an image file (in the PGXXX.zip) file back onto my SD and try again?

hmmm...ok, so I select to install from SD card, find the .zip file and it then tried to install it and then I get the message "Install Failed"
I tried 5 other roms I have and they all failed too...AGH!!!

I just went to the "info" option in "4Ext" and ti tells me my "current rom: GTJ22"

Sorry its "Installation aborted..." not what I said above.
I noticed the "J22" of the rom, so I edited the android_info file to hav teh CID as HTC_J22 but that didnt work either :-(

I was getting one with a "4.xxx" in it, and the latest one on there is recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.8-pyramid.zip which means....maybe I DID use the wrong rom !
Have to try that....problem is, Firewall at work is stopping it downloading sow ill have to do it at home :-(

To save a lot of chasing around, try the following...

Put your SD-Card onto your PC, find the PG58IMG.zip file you downloaded earlier (it needs to be in the root of the SD-Card, not in Downloads or any other folder - if it's not, move it to the root) and rename it to PG58IMG.old

If your phone is not yet rooted, then you will be best to root it. Follow these directions...

Search for Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip at XDA or Google it. Download it onto your SD-Card.

Boot into recovery and select Choose zip from sdcard

Navigate to the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip file and select it

Confirm that you want to install it

When it's successfully completed, you'll be rooted. Shut down.

Put your SD-Card back on the PC and re-name the PG58IMG.old file back to PG58IMG.zip. Put the SD-Card back in your phone.

Boot into recovery. The bootloader will find the PG58IMG.zip file automatically and will ask if you want to install it. Select yes and let it do its thing. DO NOT INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS!

When it lets you know it's finished, choose reboot and let it load and optimise the system - it'll take a few minutes. Once ICS has started, you can follow the prompts to set up the phone. When setup has completed, use the file manager app to locate the PG58IMG.zip file and change its name back to PG58IMG.old or PG58IMG.bak or whatever you prefer. This will prevent the bootloader from trying to reinstall it whenever you invoke recovery. (Or if you'd rather, shut down, put the SD-Card in your PC and rename it there before replacing it into your phone).

Setup may not have found Telecom NZ at the finish of the process... if so, just shut down. Pull the battery for 30" or so and replace it. Restart normally.

If that doesn't work, and you have no backup of your stock GB ROM, you may have to resort to using the appropriate RUU executable file to re-install your firmware. Search this forum for stock Telecom GB ROM and you'll find threads relating to restoring the Sensation back to stock for warranty. Hopefully though, the procedure with the root and PG58IMG.zip update will solve your problem.

the other thought I had was to just download a stock rom from somewhere and atleat get the phone working. i have googled around and I cant find the telcom nz stock rom.....I see the source on htcdev.com but I dont know what to do from there....so will pretend I didnt see it :-)

The RUU file I mentioned earlier is the stock ROM, and it is run on a PC while the phone is connected in Fastboot to write the required files onto the phone. As I said, if the procedure outlined in my post doesn't work, then the appropriate RUU (ROM Update Utility) file will be the next best thing. Search Geekzone>Android forum for info.

I neglected to ask if your phone is S-OFF (unlocked bootloader). I assumed it is because my Sensation was and mine's a TNZ phone as well. However, since you say you have 4EXT touch recovery, then that suggests the phone is indeed S-OFF.

yip, its S-off-ed what does the "S" mean BTW? I have not really seen any reference to it. I thought it min it might mean "sensation" but that doesnt make any sense hehe
