I am thinking of picking up a Desire Z. Now I can either get it from mobicity (NZ$ 1119) or expansys.co.nz ($1042 incl shipping). But I am also going to Singapore/Greece/London in December. Would I be better to buy it from NZ or wait and get it in the UK/Singapore?

I am new to buying phones from overseas.

Check out whether you can get the VAT refunded at the airport when you leave the UK, might be a good option.

EDIT: Try here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/sectors/consumers/overseas-visitors.htm

I'm biased against Mobicity after a not-so-good experience with them but I'd recommend waiting anyway. You may be able to pick one up duty-free in Singapore at a good price although you will need to check the warranty status. London is a good option, especially with the way our exchange rate seems to be holding steady against the GB Pound. You will need to ask for documentation for a VAT refund, which you can get after getting the documentation processed at the airport on departure from either the UK or EU.

UK online-only stores are not generally able to provide VAT refund documents so don't try to buy through an online store if you want it delivered to a UK or EU address. If the store has a retail presence this shouldn't be an issue as retailers do provide the documents when you tell them you need a VAT refund.

Picking a phone up in the UK and getting VAT refunded will be considerably cheaper than importing it into NZ & having to pay GST etc.

Just be aware that if you bring goods into NZ that have a total value of > $700NZ then you are liable for the payment of GST.  It states it on the arrival customs declaration, and you wouldn't want to falsify that.....

You would very unlucky to be pulled up for it at customs really, especially if you are using the phone already or have it out of the box.

Update: although the law is the law I suppose!

Not sure if this has been posted but a review of the device:
http://hemorrdroids.net/htc-desire-hd-review/

The two things concerned me:
1) Poor speakers
2) Washed out screen

I could do with a slightly washed out screen but maybe not poor speakers - especially when I like playing music around the house via the phone's in-built speakers (coming from an iPhone user "at the moment").

a youtube review I saw has a guy raving that the speakers are awesome... he got very excited about the speakers, so not sure who's got it right!
