The instructions I am using say "Enter recovery mode by turning your device on while holding down "Volume Down" button and "End call" button then press the "Power" button to power on your device, the hourglass stays on the screen."

If I connect the phone via USB and have debugging on, the computer can see the phone so I presume the driver is installed OK but when I attempt the above, Windows (8.1) pops up saying the usb device recently attached has malfunctioned and windows can no longer recognise it.

What am I doing wrong here?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

It's an issue with Win 8.1 and outdated Fastboot drivers.

Try using Koush's Universal ADB/Fastboot Drivers: http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/UniversalAdbDriverSetup.msi

Thanks for that. I downloaded the drivers and tried to get windows to install them but it just says that the best driver is already installed, how do I get past that?
Thanks.

Manually uninstall the device and remove the drivers in device manager.

Hmm wonder if a virtual would work? Or does it need full hardware level access?
