kiwi_64:

My wife bought one (reasonable quality/rechargeable) from one of the large Chinese supermarkets (China Town?) in Botany over Christmas.

Went to China Town this morning and only found the cheaper AA battery ones.

Remember these, I grab a new one each year and bang it up. Quality is cr*p compared to the days of yaw but lasts for a summer which does us ok.

Tried again this morning with my tennis zapper. Fly was quietly sitting on a banana in the fruit bowl so I covered it with the zapper expecting it to fly up and fry. It didn't, it flew sideways. Houdini of the fly world is still racing around with me chasing with the zapper. Wondering if zapper could be faulty and how to check it.

Have had zero results zapping but lots of exercise and one vase knocked over.

They got too many eyes and expert at mid air aerobatics.

I get them dozy on a hot day, landing on a wall or roof, And just move slowly to them and give no room for escape. Or sneak up behind with the broad face toward it. Swatting usually ends in whacking it across the room instead of zapping

And forget those buggers cutting shapes (flying in squares) in the middle of an open room hypnotised by the light fitting. Almost impossible to predict.

I had a friend bring me one back from Taiwan about 20 years ago when nobody knew they existed and is still going strong.  From memory takes four "C" sized batteries which lasts for ages.  Suffice to say gets the job done.

Funny you say that - I first saw them being used in a restaurant in Taiwan and decided I need of those.

I got one from Bunnings a couple of weeks ago...great buy!

I'd been without one for a year or two after the old one met its end against a wall.

I am crap at hitting the flies, but when I do....BANG! so satisfying!

I reckon they must give off a high frequency sound though. The moment I click the button, the flies head for the open ranch slider. Effective, but takes the fun away.

Possibly ionises/electrifies a chunk of surrounding air and shocks or peeves them off momentarily?

A couple years ago I picked up a bug zapper tennis racquet from Avondale markets. It is a rechargeable model and much more powerful that the typical battery powered ones you find in Mitre10

Anyone know where I can pick up a good one in NZ?

Could you please share a photo of this zapper?

I've been using a cheap $10 one from Briscoes. I took out a discharge resistor and that gave it more power.

Racquet arrived today and it looks very smart. Especially with the charging stand.

Already zapped a couple of blowies, and it packs about the same punch as my old rechargeable one.

I have christened it "Star Killer Base"

The plastic is the slightly soft/bendy type, that will eventually break. So I will reinforce it with fibreglass tape
