Referees decisions stand, whether reviewed or not. We wouldn’t have lost to Sheffield, according to post-match reviews of disallowed goals but we did. You had a 10 man team until the 86th minute - it was 6-0 by then.

Southampton set a few records in that match - only team to lose 9-0 twice (United are the only team to win 9-0 twice), Alexandre Jankewitz the only player on debut to be sent off before touching the ball, also fastest red card for debut player, Jan Bednarek the only player ever to complete the bad 3 - own goal, gave away a penalty & sent off. Southampton’s Sport Psychologist has a busy week ahead...

Southampton have had substantial incoming transfer funds for years & years as they’ve sold off developing stars that become superstars - from Bale & Walcott to Spurs & Arsenal years ago to recent sales of Mane & VDV to Liverpool. Having a thin squad isn’t the fault of your opponents, no matter who pulls your shirt on they should play with pride. I don’t actually think that Southampton played that bad, United were rampant.

Today is the tenth anniversary of Wayne Rooney’s wonder goal vs City - voted as the best Premier League goal ever, & certainly the most stunning moment in football I’ve ever seen. Sir Alex Ferguson rated this as the best goal he’s ever seen at Old Trafford - he’s seen a few.

Joe Hart, the England ‘keeper, doesn’t even move. Vincent Kompany, one of the greatest defenders ever, doesn’t have a clue what just happened. The Old Trafford crowd do though, they know exactly what happened as they lift the roof off the stadium.

Yeah, nah. I expected to be more impressed but I've seen better goals in the EPL. However, it is probably the best that I've seen at Old Trafford. And I've seen a few, literally.

Voted as in the most popular means very little when you've got the largest fanbase. That usually just means the fanboys voted for it.

I realise that “best” is an entirely subjective term fully dependent on the viewer’s opinion. However when you factor in the objective credentials that make up this goal - winner in local derby, scored by England’s leading goal scorer & against their international keeper & a world-class defence that City won titles with, the acrobatic manoeuvre required to latch on to Nani’s misdirected cross etc, it’s pretty difficult to beat this one.

Which goals do you think - in your opinion - are more impressive than this one?

I don't think that such credentials are relevant to the best goal shot. If such were the case then a great goal by an underdog team under intense pressure to win against the best team would be better. They're great wins, e.g. bottom of table Blackburn Rovers 3 beat top of table MU 2 in 2011, but Rooney's goal is objectively better than that without the credentials.

Also, best goal isn't necessarily the most impressive. There are other factors to consider so I would chose others depending upon how factors are weighted:

For a great (Rooney, actually) pass leading to van Persie's volley goal against Villa.

For teamwork Wilshere's goal was so smooth.

For surprise Ambrose's long-range strike.

For recognising an opportunity and having the skill to take it, Suarez not far from half way.

One of the goals I was thinking of was in the League Cup so it wasn't EPL per se.

90 + 5 mins: Man Utd win at Sunderland but City are still playing. And City despair turns to delirium as Sergio Aguero scores a last-gasp winner. It is utter heartbreak for Man Utd's fans at the Stadium of Light, though, as news filters through of the late drama. Game over. City win title.

In terms of beauty this goal has nothing on the Rooney goal, in terms of significance i think it's greater.

no way it's best goal. that would naturally be CR7 vs maybe, just maybe Ryan Giggs. most audacious for its time in EPL (mind you South Americans have been scoring from their own half for centuries by then) - Beckham - though it's been repeated a few times now inc by Rooney in case you didn't know.

CR7 vs maybe? I'm not sure we even played them but there were plenty of candidates during the glory years when the trio of him, Rooney & Tevez / Berbatov scored at will. 15 seconds from defence to goal so many times.

Giggs vs Arsenal are you referring to? That was FA cup, back when it meant something. Semi-final replay IIRC.

Beckham's first EPL goal? vs Fulham chipping the GK from halfway? Cheeky, audacious even. Best? Nah.

BTW: a question for Liverpool fans - after this morning’s hilarious antics vs Leicester City, is it time to bring back Lorus Karius? He’s still under contract to you, just loaned out forever. Allison has lost it worse than Karius ever did.

Yes, agreed. In terms of title significance, this was the most important goal scored in any EPL season. Sergio Aguero - what a superstar player he’s been for City, ranking right alongside Silva, Kompany & Toure as blue legends.

@Hammerer - that RVP strike vs Villa was a thing of beauty. Rooney’s sublime pass left RVP almost only needing to wave his left foot at the ball to score. SAF had bought van Persie to win title #20 for us & #1 for him. Rooney was instructed to play deeper than he had before as the class of ‘92 had broken up & he needed midfield strength. That goal there is the physical representation of Ferguson’s master planning.

I bought the RVP 20 shirt of that season specifically because of that goal, even though I still regard it as more of Rooney’s effort than van Persie’s.

There's great goals by Le Tissier and Bergkamp, Keegan and Wright and Shearer...like others have said - Rooney's goal is good, but it's not the best ever - it's just been voted by the legions of band-wagoneers that support Man U.
