Perhaps the rollout of the National Bowel Screening Program (Oct 2020-2022 in MidCentral, but varying around the country) may have overloaded the resources in your DHB by increasing the number of specialist outpatient appointments and endoscopies, and consequently increasing lead times for less urgent cases. Generally speaking, the same specialists work for the DHB as well as in private practice. It's possible, depending on where the bottleneck is (specialist time, endoscope availability), but I think it's unlikely that going private will speed things up.

Try calling the National Bowel Screening Program. I believe they have an 0800 number. Ask them to send you a test kit. A positive result would likely push you up the priorities, and perhaps there's an allocation of resources for NBSP cases.

Thanks for this info.

I’d be on the phone wth the GP asking for a referral elsewhere, the fact you are passing blood maybe the reason as to why your GP hasn’t asked for a faecal occult test. Other tests I would have thought would have been a digital rectal exam when you were seen to eliminate large haemmoroids.
without going into details your GP may have also made a decision On further tests based on your age, bowel frequency, appearance of the blood etc.
I would be ringing to ask for a referral elsewhere regardless

I have already sent an email to the reception of the clinic requesting for this as unfortunately there is no direct email or contact number for my GP. Not sure if that is their way of not ending up free advise :( hopefully I am wrong. Will try again tomorrow.

Yes I did and found a couple with shorter wait e.g. 2 months so will continue calling others farther to where I am located. Also arranging the referral transfer with my GP and also asked to be listed in the public wait list.

A lot of people forget to use Healthline 0800 611 116 They are amazing to talk to at any time of the day or night when you feel worried about symptoms or are not sure how to deal with medical matters. In many cases they make the call and decide to send you straight to hospital. I have used them a number of times and they have been excellent.

I would call them and tell them how worried you are and ask questions that are bothering you. It’s a 24 hr service which is great because you have someone to talk with for some practical advice and comfort if you are ruminating at 3 am.

Auckland DHB joined the NBSP in Nov 2020, so it's possible that Auckland DHB specialists are loaded up with work from that. You might have more luck in one of the other DHBs. Waitemata & Counties Manukau DHBs joined 2018, so their workload could be easing.

Thanks. I have already spoken to a few on the list and have told them as well that I am available on short notice if anyone cancels.

Still waiting for my GP to update the referral letter to make it more generic and not specific to a particular specialist. Also asked if I can see a gastroenterologist first instead of a surgeon as there are more of them.
