Let me begin by saying that I'm completely for tasers. I believe they offer a non lethal way of subduing a suspect, without putting a officer at risk of personal injury. I do see some interesting issues with what One News has covered:
But Edward Savai'i says he was tasered twice during a domestic dispute in November 2006 and it left lasting marks on his lawn and his health. "I still have chest pains, cramps, I have stomach pain, and I also have a sore lower back," says Savai'i.
Give me a break! If the cops have to taser you during a domestic dispute I think you've got more to worry about that your lawn. Maybe you should have thought about a more peaceful resolution to your dispute?
It is that sort of incident that critics say has caused deaths overseas. Marie Dyhrberg from the Campaign against the Taser says people are going to be tasered in stairwells, on tops of buildings and on concrete roads and paths.
Lets put Marie Dyhrberg out with some of the front line police in South Auckland and see what better solutions she can come up with.
There have also been cases where police have heavily outnumbered the offender but still used the taser.
Lots of cops < offender swinging a bat or other weapon
And Broad has dropped a strong hint that if police don't get tasers they may well end up fully armed.
Unfortunately with society as it is now, and with its evils (P being one) I think the cops' hands have been forced here. Tasers must win over cops have guns? I'm proud that our police don't have to be armed.
Police have already bought the stun guns at a cost of $50,000 and critics say that shows the trial is a sham.
This was a huge mistake, the cops should have held off buying the guns until the trial was complete and signed off. I wonder who pushed this through?
I'll be interested to see if tasers do come in force. If they come in, the police will need to keep a tight rein on the situations they're used in, and issue clear guidelines to officers as to their appropriate use.
Best way to avoid being tasered? Stop being a clown and follow the law like the rest of us.
