I'm going to come right out and say that this for a buddy of mine, and I when I told him that Geekzone was the place to ask, people would laugh and say 'yeah, yeah yeah. We believe you NOT.' But it really is

This buddy is leaving the South Island (Blenheim, and moving to Tauranga, and he apparently thinks that you are terrible drivers up there, and that the cops are hot on speeding (they can't be worse than down here, but there may be more of them). So he wants a dash cam, and he'd like to get one that incorporates a radar detector. Perhaps slightly weirdly, they called in to the Blenheim Repco today, and they didn't know about their dashcams, or radar detectors. Go figure.

I have a DOD LS430 and I like it a lot. Except that after I loaned my truck to my brother a while back, he changed the settings and I am unable to make it show speed from the GPS. I've never really thought about a radar detector personally, but I don't tend to tear about.

So any thoughts for 'my pal' who is heading north?

Beltronics or Escort are the radar detectors to get. I have not seen a radar detector incorporating a dash cam though.

Saw one on aliexpress or banggood the other day, but can't find it now. Had all the bands for NZ (I wanted it but they're illegal in Oz).

Thanks guys. When I looked into it some more, it looks like you need to spend a lot of money to get a radar detector worth having in New Zealand, and that did not include anything built into a dashcam. I have passed this on, and my buddy decided it was too much to pay, but that they would definitely get a dashcam. I actually got my first speeding offense a few weeks ago coming back from Westport to Blenheim. The GPS said the limit was 60kph through St Arnaud, but the cop put me straight about it being 50kph. I was tired, and didn't want to be be driving, but apparently nor did my wife, so I carried on. Exactly the sort of situation where things can go pear shaped, so fair dos I'm thinking, and I needed the wake up call.

I tell you what, it is sooooo busy in the top of the South Island compared to ten years ago even. SH63 is carrying all that Christchurch traffic of course, but Blenheim itself is chocka. Getting back to the point here, from a personal point of view, I think I'll stick to 100kph and save the price of a radar detector.

I find myself depending on the GPS more and more to tell me the speed limit and worry about getting trapped like you did. There doesn't seem to be as many speed limit signs as there used to be. It is so contrary to have ad's on TV telling you to slow down and then 5km gaps (or so) between speed limit signs. I know other people have trouble knowing the local speed limit - in the 80 kmph zone outside of my work, it is common to follow people doing 50kmph.

Garmin make a SatNav with built-in dashcam if that's of any use.

Yeah GPS map speed limit info is quite patchy.

There is one place I dive through the is 100kmh most of the year, but 50kmh during summer - folding sign.

Really easy to forget despite the speed limit sign not being visible most of the year.

Common sense would tell me that should be the opposite. Busy area with tourists or something?
