We choose not to purchase Sky's products.
We do not support hamster molestation or the violation of sovereign fishing limits.

I think it's an act of Piracy that Sky can hold all of us in New Zealand to ransom just to be able to watch our own teams compete in sports

Lias: Sky suck, and are pretty much evil, but there is no real competition for them, not even Hulu/Netflix etc.

Services like that are fine for us geeks, but they are just not suitable as a replacement for cable tv/sky for everyone yet. Some people don't always want to watch a series as such, they just want a constant stream of <insert topic here>. Be that music videos,  kids programs, crime channel, food channel, arts channel etc. You also can't "channel surf" hulu, netflix etc, until you find a random program you like, and for many people that IS consuming TV.

I disagree. Once set up (which may or may not require geek assistance), they can be very user friendly. We pretty much do all our TV watching via NetFlix & Hulu these days. And if this was difficult to do, I can assure you that we wouldn't be doing it, as I'd have never been able to talk my (largely non-technical) wife into subscribing to both these services.

Kingy: I agree. Sport is especially big. I'm basically paying Sky $90 for a $20 sports package. I barely watch anything other than sport. I'm also looking at having to fork out another $150 or so for premier league pass so I can watch that this year.

Sommet Sports are trying, but until they get all football/rugby/cricket etc there really isn't an option.

I love my rugby, and am a huge All Blacks fan. But I had no idea how much we were paying for Sky sports. When my wife informed me (she usually takes care of the household bills), I had no qualms with dropping it and watching all my beloved rugby delayed on free to air.

And with the money I save, I can go to the occasional Blues game at Eden Park. Can't beat the authentic rugby experience of freezing your [CENSORED] off while eating an overpriced, and over complicated (Moroccan lamb?! WTF?) meat pie.

jarledb: SO happy I am getting rid of Sky. Come september I only have Freeview and (what I mostly use) my AppleTV and Fire TV with Netflix, Hulu+ etc.

The only reason we still have Sky is because we are yet to get around to having our Freeview aerial coverage extended into our main lounge. We still want access to the FTA channels (primarily for news), so are tied to Sky for that until we have our aerial situation resolved.

I may even be able to do it myself, but am a little concerned of invoking the Wrath of Wife by inadvertently breaking the one working Freeview outlet in our house.

How is paying for a service piracy? (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, Vudu etc.) Blatant scaremongering by Sky. Not a good look. Did they think before they acted?

Just get a Freeview DVB-S receiver instead. IIRC, Freeview share the same satellite with Sky, so you can use the existing dish, just need a new decoder.

Edit: One of these for less than 1 month of Sky access

We already have a terrestrial aerial on our roof. But when we had it installed, we got the installer to only wire it to the aerial output point where we (at the time) had a Freeview TV. I believe it is a relatively trivial exercise to extend it to any of our other output points, but was advised at the time that its best to only wire up the points you are actually using (to ensure better signal quality).

I read about this on the NZ Herald website. I really wish they had called Sky out for their piracy comments, but they didn't. Without clarity that no piracy is involved, I think many readers will get the false impression that using Netflix is piracy.

Which is what I suspect Sky is purposely doing - and I hope the ComCom goes to town on them for it. Maybe Slingshot even have a case of libel?

Kingy: What are SKY going to do when Netflix comes to NZ then.

They clearly wont be advertising it

Er, just to play devils advocate (and putting to one side the stupid piracy comments) why should Sky have to play Slingshot's adverts?  I bet they won't play Telecom Lightbox advertising either just as they do not advertise TV One or TV3, so why is this any different?

Sky's comment is cleverly worded.  They never say that Netflix is piracy.  They say:

"We are a business that pays people who create television so we are against any form of piracy or the undermining of intellectual property rights," she said.

Global Mode was a way of illegitimately accessing Netflix which "did not pay for content rights in this territory", she said."

the keyword here is "or".
They aren't saying that Netflix is piracy. (they are implying it, which is a different thing)
They are saying that as part of being a business that pays people who create television, they don't support [list of things]
One of those list of things is "undermining intellectual property rights"  which is exactly what global mode is doing (rightly or wrongly)

I don't believe in exclusive content distribution rights per territory.

As such I am not willing to pay sky a heap of money, just to watch one movie or tv show.

I hope this only just gives Slingshot free media exposure for the global mode service.

Sky is just going to have to get comfortable with being competitive soon.
Even better, if content is purchased by a wholesaler and wholesaled at the same affordable price to both pay TV and FTA.

In summary.
Poor form Sky.
