Yep, I have to admit even though I am a long time Sky subscriber Freeview HD with either Tivo or a Freeview HDD recorder offers far better value for money. The Sky subscription goes up every year too.

We're coming out of a "recession" so feel the effects of budget cutting. Content has suffered. I got Sky 3 years ago specifically for documentaries and now find watching it less and less.

A month ago an American Christian channel was added (112) and I though great, something decent to watch, but they are showing only old sermons, constantly selling something, and even claims to be the first Christian broadcaster in NZ (stated on their web site). At least Shine (111) has some relevant programmes that are not only "turn-or-burn" preaching.

Even FTA is suffering. My wife is into Sci-Fi and a week ago one of her programmes on FTA was "taking a break mid season until later in the year". Now she is downloading it (legally). The "recession" has affected all broadcasters.

If Sky does not improve very soon they are likely to loose many subscribers.

Back in the 1990s when Sky was very limited in the number of channels they could broadcast I don't think they had much option but to focus on quality. Remember how high quality the movie channel on Sky was back then.... They've gone for quantity of content over quality as the bandwidth has opened up to them.

Sky ends at my place tonite. Moving to new house Friday and Sky is not moving in. Not worth the money.

If youre interested in some decent documentaries I suggest you get a DVB-S tuner to catch SBS from Aussie.

I did it to watch the World Cup last month and both my wife and I have been really impressed with the amount of decent documentaries and 'foreign' films theyve shown.

We dont want much tv at all really, but with the HTPC its easy to just record something thats catches your eye and after a couple of days you build up a list of things to watch.

We also noticed an awful lot less ads too and I mean a lot less! Although its depressing to see how cheap everything is over there !

I know this thread start off being about Discovery but it seems to have morphed into a general Sky discussion. IMHO, apart from Sport, I reckon the best value part of Sky is Rialto Channel - costs a small amount and has some really great movies. We record/watch heaps of them.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

For the collection of 7x channels, I'd be quite happy to see them drop all programmes that have "American", "Most", "Mega...", "Deadliest", "Disaster" or "Destroyed" in the title. They'd only need 1 or 2 channels for the rest, but maybe then they could do them in HD?
