Charging extra for HD is also pretty normal. Netflix do, Stan (Australia) do, Foxtel do for their set top box customers. Some don't though, like Neon and Fan Pass (both Sky companies), and Lightbox (although they have indicated that they are going to add a 'premium' option in the coming months.

The issue is Sky make $12 per subscriber per month. If everyone had HD (and they dont), then dropping HD cost will cause Sky to shut the doors and liquidate the company and pay back the shareholders, breaking even doesn't work. A vastly reduced profit also doesn't work. Best you can hope for is that they make other changes in the future and HD is free (but its actually still built in)

They can still lock video output to the users STB at sd resolution, via software if they really want to.

Actually Netflix charge extra for UHD HD is standard in their cheapest plans and the UHD plan supports 4 concurrent streams rather than 2 for very little more a month so not really comparing Apples with apples.

So reducing some SD channels, ok. If they dropped some SD channels they would need to be the non popular ones, so some will still expect a refund. You'd expect they have looked at this, or are, or will. I have no idea what 2 transponders cost to lease.

Fair comment. Optus charges for HD, so not much option there. Should Sky ditched the satellite, and what Fellet said about the upgrade that allows apps to be on the STB and possibility of a non STB Sky app, you could read into that that satellite is on the way out in favour of broadband. If thats the case you would expect that they will drop the HD fee. Perhaps a deal with Optus to support satellite feeds on a per subscriber basis.

Charging extra for 4K is understandable (like Netflix) but for 1080p is a bit rich. Most content is filmed in HD these days from my understanding so charging for it is a bit strange.

So reducing some SD channels, ok. If they dropped some SD channels they would need to be the non popular ones, so some will still expect a refund. You'd expect they have looked at this, or are, or will. I have no idea what 2 transponders cost to lease.

They wouldnt be losing any content as there is NO need for SD versions of Sky sports etc once all subscribers have the newer decoders.
