We are on Rural Broadband with an 80gb data limits. Since the rollout of the new sky we have noticed (perhaps purely by coincident) that at certain times our data gets chewed up at an alarming rate and we can't make it to the end of the month.

 

 

 

Does Sky randomly download data to the box with no user input? The data is being used whilst no one is at home and the only devices on and connected are the sky box and a Dlink dns320-L NAS Box.

 

 

 

If not I can eliminate this a a possible cause. Is there any software available to monitor which device is using which data on the network?

How fast is your broadband? It looks odd to me that there are consistently 499.0MB blocks, especially in some cases in a relatively short (~3 minute) period. You'd need to sustain somewhere around 20Mbps transfer rate to do that, which is easy enough on fibre but as you reference rural I suspect it's either RBI or ADSL.

It is 4G. Not sure of the exact speed but it is pretty fast.

Unplug the box and see if it still happens, sky software updates should be OTA and not using data

Turn off the Sky decoder, see if it stop.

Sky box has been disconnected from the network all morning so I guess that eliminates that.

 

 

 

I'll try another forum now I know its not the sky box.

The fact its 499 looks like it could be firmware. Do you have a smart phone that could potentially be trying (and failing) to update?

This will be a pain, if you cannot find the MAC or IP address on the ISP report try turning off all your devices and turn them on one at a time to find the source device. Then look at the offending device to see what is happening

499mb looks to me like your ISP just starts a new block for billing and tracking after 499mb.

 

As others have said, disconnect the sky box from your network and see what happens.
