An installer back in 2013 said that it was in testing. Surely it would be cheaper in the long run, though fibre cuts could cause problems. Also I can assume that they would be able to increase the bitrate of their channels. With fibre they could bring Sky Sport HD back to the bitrate and resolution it was 2-3 years ago before they secretly decreased it without 99.9% of customers noticing.

Sky don't have the hardware or capability to do it and have never looked seriously at this yet. Vodafone on the other hand have the ex TelstraClear playout system for the cable network that's native IP so it was simply a matter of reusing that to send a multicast UFB feed to the masses.

If the deal with Vodafone doesn't do ahead I'm sure they'll be looking at going down that path as they can deliver using Multicast to an additional ONT port.

It uses Multicast on Fibre so network congestion isn't a problem
