Following is our experience with Sky ? up to you if you decide to cancel your direct debit with them.

3 weeks ago around $40 was to be direct debited for Sky. Instead, $590 was taken. It took us nearly 2 weeks of begging, pleading and demanding, and over a dozen calls and e-mails, to get our money back.

Not a single manager would either take, or return, our calls. Despite us missing paying bills because we didn't have enough money in our account, Sky refused to credit us back the money any earlier than their "standard refunds process" dictated.

Eventually we succeeded - and it was clear that they thought they were doing us a "favour". And to make up for the stress and hassle caused? No apology, but free movies for a month. Which we don't even subscribe to because we don't watch many movies.

Thank you Sky - you behave exactly like a company with no competition and no interest in keeping customer's happy.

So over to you, Geekzoners, if you want to keep your Direct Debit with Sky.
We do not.

{MOD EDIT : SP : Moved to the Sky forum}

Did they say why they took the wrong amount ?

Personally I dont like DD - Ive ended up at Baycorp due to one DD going AWOL...... was not impressed (not with Sky tho).
I prefer to see where and when my money goes out :)

Sort of - we had MySky installed a month ago on the $15 a month option. It was something to do with that, apparently, but it still doesn't add up (to buy the MySky outright is $599, which is more than the $590 they took).

Something else to add - they told us they did in fact know that we had been charged incorrectly on our account some time before our billing date, yet made no attempt to fix it before the direct debit took the money.

If it wasn't for the fact I'm a Cricket and League fanboy, and the kids would turn feral without the Disney channel, I would ditch Sky in a millisecond.

You never buy MySky outright - period.

You can't.

So why would they have offered me the option of buying it outright for $599? Or was that just the silver MySky, and not HDi?

They didn't offer you the option "of buying it outright" :(

Either whoever you spoke to conveyed the wrong information, or you misunderstood what they meant.

Sorry.

Well they did - otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the $599 figure.
However, I take your point about being conveyed the wrong info. After my dealings with them I'm not exactly falling off my seat with surprise.
It wouldn't be a very attractive option anyway - it would take over 3 years of rentals to make up the $599, and you'd be responsible for any repairs etc.

You can either pay $15/month for the box or pay a one-off $599 fee for it. Either way, the device is still owned by Sky

Oh - well that option well and truly sucks then.

Perhaps for you. I've gone with that option and have no issues with my decision to do so. I will have Sky for at least another 3 years so it will pay itself back. Saves me buying a 3rd party PVR (for around the same cost) and trying to fuddle through setting that up to record sky instead and never being quite as good as the MySky HDi box.

One of the major reasons why I avoid any kind of DD - so effing hard to get a corporation to reverse an incorrect billing. As you have discovered.

Also, the billing cycles and my forthightly pay packets don't always sync up properly, and so DD can yank money out at a most inopportune time ...

Automatic payments are easier to control, defering payments on some weeks, topping up on others ...

And you can query any bills prior to payment ..

Did you not get an invoice or statement ? Direct Debit or not, you should get a statement / invoice.

Works well for me, your mileage may vary ...

Sky do not provide an account if you are on Direct Debit, unless there is a change to the amount being billed (and even then I have my suspicions about if they do or not).
Since this was an error on their part, they did not send an account. Which apparently was also an error on their part.
Blah blah.

These are all good points.

Of course if a certain company requires you to pay via DD then tell them you'd like the payment date to be altered to suit - most companies are fine with doing this. I setup many of my DD's to come out 2 days after my monthly salary goes in. Having said that, this still would not have helped eliminate what happened to the OP!
