Sky now have more info on their coverage on their website. Shame there's no HD, but I can understand why.  D1 sounds like it's seriously full.

All information regarding the programming of the Winter Olympics will be in a lift-out in the February SKYWATCH. SKY Sport will be covering every event at the games including uninterrupted coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies (on SKY Sport only). We will be using external commentary for all events except the opening and closing ceremony where SKY TV's commentators will put a kiwi spin on things (as TVNZ has done in the past). Stephen McIvor and co will be calling this. The Opening and closing ceremonies on Prime (our free to air broadcast) will have ads throughout, however SKY Sport 4 (Ch. 131) will have commercial free uninterrupted coverage.

  • Prime (Free to air) will have 12 hours each day of coverage

  • SKY Sport will have four 24 hour dedicated channels (SKY Sport 4, 5, 6 & 7 - Ch. 131-134) at not extra cost to SKY Sport subscribers

  • SKY Sport 1, 2 & 3 will have a 2 hour highlights show every night during the Olympics a 19:00

  • There will also be coverage available through our online and mobile platforms

Although this event is going to be filmed in HD, SKY does not have enough bandwidth available to broadcast Sport 4-7 in HD. So a decision was made to broadcast in standard definition as this way we are able to give customers unprecedented coverage of this event as described above. We hope you can appreciate any decision we take is never done so lightly and we also hope you will be able to enjoy our coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The reality is that they can run 4 SD cahnnels at 2 Mbps each (and yes it will be that low) and still save on what a single HD channel would have used in bandwidth. I won't be watching. Commonwealth Games will be same debauchery.

P.S. Giving its coming from North America I wouldn't be surprised if feeds are 4:3 480i.

I'm quite sure that in NA it will be shown in HD.  Sure NBC won't be paying for SD feeds..

No i wouldn't think so. They'll bring the feeds in as HD, then downscale it at their end. Hope the highlights will be in HD on SS1 and 2

Will be interesting to see what bitrates are used. I hope at least 4-5.

True, but it doesn't follow that feeds to Sky are HD. ESPN content is 90% 720p60 in North America with a nice 480i 4:3 feed reserved especially for this part of the world. HD feeds are supplied at 45 Mbps and cost a lot of money. HD is generally not distributed via satellite. 2008 Olympics HD coverage was over fibre.

P.S. I pick 544x576i resolution for these channels.

Not at all acceptable.

NZ needs to catch up! The Olympics should be shown in HD. Saying there isn't enough space available simply doesn't cut it anymore. HD has been around for the best part of 10 years its not like it has just arrived and is cutting edge (that is held for 3D which should be arriving late this year in the US my vote is mid 2016 for NZ).

The story about the decision not being taken lightly is rubbish. This is the perfect showcase of what the world of HD has to offer and Sky would rather to continue to line their pockets while the consumer suffers once again. Sky recently launched their HDi product yet not supplying any of the games in HD the first real chance to show off how "great" their product is, is a stupid decision.

Until Sky can show they are committed to providing subscribers the best of what is available in HD I will not be giving them any of my money.

What about using the capacity they have on optus D3? if they don't have an uplink for 156E then get foxtel to uplink it for them

Foxtel in Australia will get 4-channel coverage with a special plan for A$50-65 (including HD).

Very disappointing that Sky NZ won't be showing Vancouver 2010 in HD.

The bandwidth issue they speak of is to do with bringing the HD feeds into NZ, 45 Mbps each. They simply don't have the connectivity with outside world to do it. Low bandwidth SD content comes via satellite, so you won't be seeing any HD highlights.

860 gigabit/s at the end of 2008. Southern Cross recently announced a planned upgrade to over 1.2Tbps by end Quarter 1 2010.

Seems link way more than 45Mbps to me.

Even 4 ADSL2+ lines just like spyware's would do it.

Southern Cross cable doesn't actually terminate in Sky's building though does it.

It terminates close enough that for a few thousand Sky could probably sort out a fibre link though. It just wouldn't be cheap. Then again, Foxtel is charging a nominal fee to cover it, why can't Sky? And the best part is that they'll have all that capacity, all paid for, to deliver more HD content (ergo getting more people on HDi).

Yes, I realise "a few thousand" is an understatement. Possibly even a very large one.
