Telecom have launched the first Packet based mobile EFT-POS terminal in NZ. The terminal is a Verifone 3600 that has a built in CDMA module. There is a news release and info at www.ttlnz.co.nz

Older mobile terminals used a cell phone in circuit switched mode which could take 40 seconds for handshaking and then a further 20-30 seconds to complete a transaction. The Verifone 3600 only takes 8 to 10 seconds for a transaction.

That's quite impressive in terms of time! I remember the CSD based EFT-POS solutions using an attached mobile phone... Very slow.
