So my s4 screen just went into fuzzy color lines and then blank. I restarted it and nothing. Hope I can get me data out with a cable. No cga or anything as it was bought in jbhifi Australia.

Had swore by the moon and the stars I'd stay away from samsung but I see that DSE and NL have the s5 for 599!
So - what else can I get that is as good, or that's cheaper by a lot.

I need these for my phone
- good browsing - hence also 4G
- not slippery as I use one handed without a case
- I have small hands so as small as possible with as big a screen as possible
- reliable - lives depend on it

Thinking of a nexus 5 from justwow but I don't know how long it will take to ship

"Lives depend on it" would suggest buying from a reputable retailer may be a good idea. How old is the S4? Sounds like a hardware issue but may be worth checking out properly.

I'd stay with Samsung just because I like the front hardware button.

18 mths. Did u have the s4? I hate it bcos every app i use is very laggy to open (I am not a very patient man I must say, but, but ...) . But the internet says th s5 is far superior even though the screen size is the same.

I have the S4, I find it fine and apps open fast enough, though I have a custom ROM based on Touchwiz. Touchwiz has a reputation for slowing it down. You could try Google edition or similar, if it's not borked. The new ART VM should speed opening times too, once it's available, which could be months.

Actually S5 is $598 at DSE so my friend went to warehouse stationery and got them to beat the price by 5% and got it for $568.10 last night.

Does s5 have art?

I don't think so, but I'm 99% sure the Android 5 version of S5 Touchwiz will have ART.

Sony Z3 compact? The screen size is a bit smaller than the S4, but this also means the whole package is also a bit smaller making 1 handed operation very nice.  The S4 is just manageable for me (95% of the time) as a 1 handed device.  The Z3c is essentially top of the line hw (apart from the screen) in a small form factor.

Battery life on these things are pretty epic compared to a S4, the only thing really missing is Qi charging.

[edit]  Another one to consider would be a LG G2, 'same' internals as a Nexus 5, bigger screen, bigger battery in same size form factor [/edit]

On the plus side you get to act superior and condescending to anyone not using an iOS device, without having to justify any reason - so you can look forward to that.

I am looking forward to no more wasting time customizing the phone into oblivion and spending time actually doing other stuff ... let's hope I don't go down the path of jailbreaking. tried it once on an iphone 4 and just about died from extreme hassle and nothing worked

Funny that's how Android users make me feel as an iOS user.
