Greetings,

My nokia 3586 recently went away for repair, as a number of the buttons weren't working / working intermittently and I had enough, vitually unusable, so I took it in to my nearest telecom dealer, who sent it away for service.

I heard back from them earlier this week, and my phone has 'extensive corrosion from water damage' (from the great storm that hit Lower Hutt in Feb) and that it isn't repairable, and was suggested that I claim on insurance for accidental damage. So I ring up 0800 MOBINS, but I have no insurance with them (!) - thought I would, being on a corporate contract, so the 3586 wasn't on my house&contents - so I rang the Wellington Corporate Services people with Telecom, but the rep wasn't too sure either...

So now I'm left with 19 months / 24 month contract and no phone!
Anyone know what my options in the matter would be - i.e contract dissolves? or I have to get another phone and rig it to the contract?


Any help would be much obliged!

Its up to you and the contract is still valid, Telecom can't control the way you look after your handset and if you had insurance it would of being coming on your monthly invoice from Telecom.

Buy a new handset out right at your cost and get the ESN activated on your old mobile number

In this case I don't think it's how he looked after the cellphone. It was a flood, so that could be covered by insurance, if any.

In Torque's case it seems the insurance company refuses to pay based on the fact that this account is a corporate one, not a personal one. If your company bought the cellphone, or if you bought the cellphone for your personal use but claimed the GST back based on a personal GST basis, then this would not be covered by your Goods insurace. But if you bought with your own money and have a receipt in your name, and did not claim the GST back, then I'd claim it on the personal Goods insurance.

In any case, I don't think Telecom will do much, since it's not related to the contract.

It wasn't flood damage 'per se'......... I was out trying to deal with all the trees blocking the road, and landslides etc.... so it was 'general wet'.
And I do claim the GST back, so that may well be why.

Time to dig into the money I was saving for a new PDA :(
Maybe a Sanyo 8100......

If you have 'lost' or had your phone 'stolen', you can get a handset at Telecoms new connection pricing (RRP on the website). Otherwise obtain a phone by whatever means and get yourself esn changed onto it. You wont get a cheaper handset while you are in contract, as your contract relates to the fact you got a cheaper handset in the first place. Insurance with Telecom is a value added service that must be signed up for in advance.

At least you had a semi working phone.

I got a new 6225 and had it for 1 day and my friends dog ATE it! It actually chewed it up and swallowed some of the pieces!

I had to buy another one with my own money.
