not legally.

when i had a motorola there was a setting for data/ fax connection or memory card under connectivity.
if you just want to upload/ download to the memory card, select memory card then it installs as a
usb mass storage device.

The motorola mobile phone tool software costs a lot of money - which is an absolutely rip off as every other phone company gives their software away for free.

Motorola also force you to use a "genuine" Motorola USB cable - otherwise it won't work. So if you haven't got one give up now.

I had a copy of the software but it wouldn't work with Vista so I had to work out how to cobble something together until they finally updated it.

There are two solutions to your problem:

1. Illegally - Obtain the software via bittorrent or similar.

2. Legally - register at the Motorola Developer site: http://developer.motorola.com/  and download the USB drivers: https://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/Handset_USB_Driver/

Via option 2, you'll be limited in what you can do - you'll be able to at least connect to the device and use it as modem if you want (with a bit of dial up connection set up) - and you should be able to use it as mass storage device - however I can't remember if I did the mass storage option or not.

I never had to use a "genuine" cable. Just a standard miniUSB cable should do the job for your E770

Ditto, Ive used multiple USB cables and never had a problem.

As for the software, you can find it on Trademe with a cable for around $20 IIRC but if its the latest version and legal, who knows.....

Strange - my Motorola V3x certainly ignored any other USB cable (e.g. the one that came with my Blackberry or my camera) and would only work with the genuine Motorola one. It wouldn't even charge the phone over USB when a non-genuine cable was being used. Same with non-genuine power adapters.

Perhaps it was V3x specific.
