NOPE
different systems different standards

but down the track telecom may end up going the w-cdma route meaning they will be running the same system and will both be compatible

Telecom T3G is CDMA with EV-DO
Vodafone is upgrading is GSM/GPRS network to Wideband CDMA (different from CDMA) aka. UMTS

3G refers to network capability to download and upload at a certain bandwidth

Hang on, so if vodafone is upgrading or planning to upgrade its current system, does that mean it will phase out GSM phones? Or will they work with the wideband CDMA?

the progression is
gsm -> gsm/grps -> * -> w-cdma
w-cdma will fall back on the existing gsm/gprs network
the * represents an optional edge step that can be seen overseas but not in NZ

wideband cdma is umts - the evolution of gsm into 3G

CDMA is a different technology competiting with gsm this is used by telecom and their 3g ev-do network falls back on their earlier 1x rtt cdma network

GSM/GPRS devices dont have forward compatibility with WCDMA and will not work on a UMTS network.
A UMTS device will operate on a GSM/GPRS network if the manufacturer has incorporated the GSM modeules into the device. ie: UMTS phones today contain both WCDMA and GSM/GPRS transciever to provide backward compatibility.
Check out feedback on UMTS handsets from Australia's 3 network....it makes for concerning reading.
