Hey the other day i accidently stood on my phone when i was getting outta bed and it broke the screen :( (Which is suprising because the tough little phone had been to hell and back for the last year or so)

it is a gtran 4020 phone,

i have insurance with telecom.. and i got it when the phone was around $500 (I should have got rid of the insurance when the price dropped)

so is it worth claiming ? because im guessing if i do i will get like a nokia 2280 or something :(

Also is there anyway to get my numbers off the phone ? thanks in advance

Telecom's insurance company (Mobile Insurance) will replace your phone with its current equivalent. My guess would be a TX115c or more likely a Samsung X609. You will have to fork out the $85 excess. If you want a better phone, you can pay the difference of the dealers buy price between your G-Tran and the phone you want.

I doubt that they will lay a 2280 on you. Bad news is that TC's Synapse system has no data cable for the G-Tran, so your contacts are lost unless a third party comes to the, uh, party, I guess.

What do you mean by that ?

Do you mean that.. a say $500 phone.. would be $350 ? is that right ?

The handsets are bought at significantly higher prices than what they are sold for with a prepay or open term contract. For instance, a $199 retail handset would be bought from a supplier at about $350.

This means if TC paid $x for the G-Tran and you wanted to get a Sanyo 7400 which cost TC $y, you would pay $y - x + 85 (excess). Unfortunately in your case, the latest buy price is going to be somewhat lower than when you bought your handset. Best bet is to go into a store and hope you manage to get a saleperson that is aware of the processes.

Lame. Sorry about that. Yeah, if the cost of the repair is less than the replacement on the phone then mobile insurance will look at that first. Same for any insurance company. Should have warned you it was a possibility. At least if they fix it you will have your contacts...

FYI - The phone will have come down to us for quoting, and more often than not if it's only a cracked LCD the insurance company will choose to go ahead. If there's other problems like signs of liquid damage it gets quoted for anything thats wrong with it.

We normally quote an LCD replacement at $188+GST. However if you've sent it in via a store they do quite often add a handling fee for non-warranty repairs. But if it's insurance that won't affect you.

Yep, TC have a handling fee, but it does reflect the amount of paper work and time involved in non-warranty repairs. Most stores will be able to loan you a handset while yours is away for repair. They will do an ESN change so your number will be on the loan phone.

A lot of stores will not offer this, but will (hopefully gladly) do it if you ask - there is another load of legal stuff and paperwork with loan phones... some stores are now charging bonds.

If the quote is going to be 188 + GST then I would say that Mobins will pay to get it fixed, as the buy price for your replacement will be above this.

well i went in yesterday ask what the hell was going on.. and apparently the lady had been trying to get hold me :/ ..

they found water damage in the fone aswell.. so i had to ring up the insurance AGAIN and make another claim saying it had water damage aswell.. ffs

I have a question.. cause i need my numbers in the fone.. urgently... like.. heaps

Is there ANYWAY i can get them ? can they get them off the fone for me ? even just write them down and fax them.. its urgent as

If the phone will not power up then there is no way to get your contacts. If it does power up, most service agents will baulk at connecting a water damaged handset to a PC for data retrieval. Sorry, but I think you are out of luck so far as your contacts go.

it powers up and runs fine.. from waht i could tell it was just the screen..

I know how the water damage happened thou.. but i thought it was fine cause it had been working fine

:(

Yeah, water damage can take time to manifest itself as a problem. Corrosion can occur slowly and phones can start playing up a month after they were dropped in water.
