Hey everyone,

What does everyone think of NEC? I found that it's quite a stable (not as strong as Nokia and such though) brand overseas in Asia and some parts of Europe (dunno about the states though) and I'm still wondering why Vodafone isn't supporting NEC mobiles (Telecom won't count, they don't have GSM, boo hoo). How much do you guys think it would cost Vodafone to load software in their system to support the NEC mobiles? I find that the NEC makes really good mobiles that are stylish and are packed with cool features. In comparison to Sharp or the cr4ptacular Alcatels, I think they're much better, and up against the Sharp mobiles, they're a much better value mobile too. I know quite a few people with NECs and I have a hard time telling them that their $500NZD mobile won't work properly in NZ but I'm still trying my luck and configuring them to see if they'll work.

What does everyone here think? I'm really curious.

If its a GSM NEC phone it will work on the NZ network and the features like WAP, PXT will work as well

Are you sure? All the NEC phones I've seen so far have been configured to vodafone's settings and they still don't work, I confirmed it with vodafone customer services. In theory they should work, but there's 2 more NEC phones that I'm going to configure next week or two, so I'll find out then. :) I'll post back if it does work.

If they are WAP 2.0 only handsets make sure you use the port 8080

Ok, I've tried configuring the two NEC phones to receive MMS this weekend with no luck. :( I used the settings from http://www.vodafone.co.nz/vlive/vlive_specifications.jsp and I also tried using port 8080 rather than 9201 (the same as WAP). All the configurations fitted and saved into the entry fields but it still kept receiving a text from vodafone to visit the pxtworld.co.nz website. Really really annoying. The phones were model: N916 if anyone has one or anything. They're really cool, but they just don't work properly. Anyone knows why they don't work? That would be a good answer to get, is it a software issue at vodafone's end? Vodafone pointed me to go to the NEC website, I doubt I'll get a good answer there, they don't directly supply to the NZ market for mobile phones.

Not sure if this will help but if you goto vodafones website (www.vodafone.co.nz), login with your phone number, on 'My Vodafone' there should be an entry with 'PXT preferences'. (It is underneath PXTworld.)

In that popup, you can tick "I have a PXT capable phone", (and "I want to receive promotional PXT from Vodafone" if you want to collect their MMS's they send time to time), then click submit. I have never had that issue myself as I had started off with a PXT capable phone to begin with, but it has worked with my GF's account.

Either that or call 777. :)

Ok, I'll try send an mms from the phone first, and then try to send one to it. No harm in trying, except for 20c per mms...

While I go and do that...Vodafone customer services asked me to contact NEC NZ so I did but because they don't supply directly to the NZ market, they don't have any mobiles to test anything on, or any information. They pointed me to NEC Australia and their mobile phone division so I'm waiting for a response. If I find a solution, I reckon I could charge everyone that I know for configuring their phone, I could make heaps. :D Happy days it would be.

Back to my original question, so what does everyone think of NEC? I'm curious I've heard some good things about them from campus, but I've heard one person say that they're not very good. But I guess that's like me saying that Alcatels aren't very good when lots of people have, and like them especially the 735.
