Hey all,

I'm a Canadian currently studying in AU and after a long search, finally found a geek-friendly forum that isn't based in the US :). Nothing against them - they just can't seem to answer my question!

I've got an unlocked 7135 (CDMA phone w/Palm OS4 integrated). Telstra used to sell them for an ungodly price. I'm trying my damnest to get it working over here... Telstra will let me activate it but they don't know their own settings for their phones. I can see the store staff not being able to help but I've had no success from tech support or anyone else.

I'm looking for things like a recent Primary Roaming List, (Home) System ID, IMSI settings, CDMA Primary/Secondary channel settings, etc. If I was incredibly lucky, I'd find someone with a working 7135 and could get the settings from them - I can guide you through how to look them up if you're not sure.

I'm not rich but I'd *love* to have this phone working here. I'm currently carrying this dead phone (Palm functionality isn't affected), another mobile, my keys, change, etc all in my pockets... this is nuts.

Or does anyone have any other ideas where I can look or go? (ie: websites, geek friends in Telstra, other technology-based forums that are popular for this part of the world)

Hwey ahve you tried telecom. They use to sell this phone some time ago and I know friends that have a working one.

Hey,

First off - thanks for the replies, sorry I didn't check back sooner.

1) It looks like even if I could get things working with Telecom (I'm in AU, they're NZ based) I'd be paying roaming fees to make calls. Looks painfully expensive.

2) The only two CDMA providers (that I'm aware of) in AU are Orange and Telstra. I talked with Orange and they told me they don't activate foreign phones.

I'm just about to give up my search - it looks like the information I need is just too rare/hard to find. I'll probably just buy another 7135 from eBay that was already activated on Telstra and sell my existing 7135... damn.

But if anyone wants to surprise me with either the information or someone to ask that knows the information I need, I'll be happy to send a little money your way :).

Telecom discuss it in their Telepermit Site.

Now I know you are referring to Orange in Ausi, but I have a feeling that same policy will be applicable to most CDMA networks worldwide.

my opinion in this case is, especially you're a foreigner in Australia, probably your best choice is to use a GSM phone, then so when you do roam around other parts of the world, you are GUARANTEED success roaming without reconfiguration.

That is one main reason why I am (still) using GSM phone.

Internet is my backyard...

Agreed. You just need to purchase a local SIM, maybe get the GPRS profiles (or set them up yourself), and your rolling. Also stops you from getting completely owned by roaming rates.

Of course you have problems with carriers locking phones but that tends to be the exception rather than the norm.

Hey,

I knew about the problem with activating foreign phones on other companies services before I got here - Telstra said bring the phone down, buy a CDMA connection kit, and they'd help with any connection trouble (since they sell the phone, they have the documentation on how to program it). Once I got here, it was a different story :).

GSM isn't an option for me, as I'm looking to activate this specific model phone (which is CDMA). I haven't seen another similar phone in this price range that I'm interested in. I personally would prefer using a GSM-based phone though.

Next time, I'll probably just scout around ebay instead of bringing a phone to activate. With the settings in-hand, it's trivially easy if you're comfortable with technology and have the right tools (My original Kyocera 6035 smartphone was purchased in the US, activated in Canada before all the carriers banned foreign phones). Cell phones are largely a commodity item now and technical/customer support seems to be less important than selling a cheaper phone.

Oh well. I risked, I lost, I'm now looking to buy a 7135... :).

what about Treo 600 CDMA or Treo 650 CDMA? it is using a newer Palm OS and is in small candy bar with touch screen and built in keypad. very compact and looks good, i like it. but sadly i'm more of a pocketpc user (can't figure out how to use Palm OS)

I've looked at a few Treo reviews and have heard good things but I'm generally liking the 7135's "I'm a phone that can do some palm stuff" rather than Treo's "I'm a palm pilot primarily, but can do some phone stuff"). Still is a good idea, next time I'm near a store, I might go try one out to see if I would like it. Thanks.

Hmmmm..now you have me thinking. If I can get a phone, I can extract what I/you need from one.

I have a rather hacked hyundai on 027 but I have moved off shore (Melbourne) and would like to get it operating in aus

I only have a GSM Telstra phone.

Seriously you might want to look at getting a local GSM phone and hooking it onto a network

(vodafone sold phones are UNLOCKED) the rest are network locked though chreaper so beware.

Use Vodafone, Optus, Telstra, first then look at the others.

3G runs on optus, orange run on telstra, 02 runs on telstra, Revolution runs on Vodafone, M runs on telstra

PM me if you can borrow a Telstra CDMA phone and i'll take you from there :-)

Hey,

Hmmm... a Telstra CDMA phone. I'll try but very few people around here have gone with Telstra and most of them have GSM models but I'll keep my eyes peeled.

I've looked at the Treo online and have decided that while it's close to what I want, I'd still much prefer the 7135 - so I'm keeping a close eye on eBay for a Telstra 7135. If I find that, as long as it is unlocked, I can pull any settings you need :).

So I'll keep my eye out for a Telstra CDMA phone and will try to remember to check back here if I snag a Telstra 7135.

I recently saw a Kyocera 7135 that had Australian CDMA software on it instead of the Telecom software. So they must be available on CDMA in Aus. It said TELUS instead of TELECOM when you turned the thing on.

Sorry it cannot be done, Unlike NZ, the phones use OTA (over the air) programming. the phone setup WILL work with a lot of playing around. (I cracked the SPC code) but Telstra would not let me register the ESN. I will not post the details here as it's not avail to general public.

Back in 025 days, they simply made a "phone" in the system, selected a model (IE NOK5120,MOTD630,EAH235), added the ESN into ICMS and boom, it was done.

They were so basic, it was very easy.

CDMA phones generally have specific network info for accessing WAP and also SMS channels in the handset plus different ways of accessing the actual network at a higher level. TNZ phones have a "telecom" folder in the ROM and 3 others which hold access IP's and security keys for WAP data. Telecom Nokia's will not accept anything other than 173xxxxxxx for programming.

I chopped a hyundai (Qualcomm MSM series CPU aka EASY) and it technically works fine, Could not register it to actually operate sorry :-(

Same bad luck with t'com getting the telstra phone setup here. (it was $89 so who cares really)
