Yeah this can't be, there are only about 1-2 Samsung phones on teh old CDMA network which work on GSM networks like 2degrees and Vodafone.

I've got the Samsung W531 as my backup phone, it works on my old CDMA number and i can switch between my Voda and 2 degrees sims :)

FYI:

Note for OP and others, Samsung W531 is only capable of voice calls and SMS on a GSM network (Vodafone and 2 Degrees Mobile), MMS/PXT/WAP/Data will not work.

Also XT has no GSM capability, so is incompatible with this handset.

Yeah that's true, that's all I use it for :) no picture messages at all, but the camera on it is a bit crappy...and what i always say to people is, if you want a good camera, don't get a phone. I only ever use my phone camera for:
- accidents(if i'm involved, not rubbernecking)
- funny situations

That's right about XT not working on the GSM phones either, must be WCDMA 850/2100, like my Sony W760i with my telecom XT number :)
