I could pretty much guarantee Spark will give you the massive run around for ever and ever and ever...

As it was Telecom / Spark who were selling these in NZ, wouldn't it make sense for them to try and get the license for say 5 years, to keep the EPG going just for NZers? The problem is we were never told that there was only a 10 year license on the boxes being able to get the EPG, and by the time these boxes  got to NZ, that would have only been 7-8 years left on the license. They were still selling them up to 4-5 years ago as well, and in the end they were including them at no additional cost if you signed up to a 12 month contract broadband connection.

If spark got lightbox to run it, they could put netflix and lightbox on it, and maybe even bring in the new generation boxes, and distribute them in proper bricks and mortar retailers this time?

As already stated in this thread.....

EPG  is already available for free.

Don't blame Freeview.

A big plus for the TiVo was 2 weeks EPG. So it didn't come from the same place obviously.

On a side note, when i had an issue with my tivo not recording from the Genie 5 yrs back, all my responses were from Australian support.

So i'm sure our EPG's are "linked" in that regard too.

I emailed Dr Tivo Darren King in Australia this morning to thank him for his support to me over the years. I  upgraded drives and fixed one or two other issues under his guidance I am indebted his generosity and support.

He asked me to pass this on, let's hope they might be successful;

"Tell your guys over there we are working hard to get the series 3 units over onto the old OzTiVo EPG server which of course would extend to NZ if successful. Happy for anyone over your way to collaborate."

That is good news.   Hopefully it all works out and we can keep the TiVos running.

From what I can see, it is all Australian based, as the Hybrid company who also runs the NZ website, is an Australian registered company, and not registered in NZ from what I can see. So it appears these are  same hardware as the Aussies ones, with all the same features and specs. It appears the Aussie Hybrid company have the Tivo license for both NZ and Oz jointly. So don't think there is any presense in NZ at all. Not sure where the 0800 tivo number goes these days, it used to go to telecoms helpline, now spark.

This time frame speaks for itself. And the cost, i.e, zero.

I get your point but your wanting the old Tivo UI to be updated to now. It's old. To add an app capability to an old device, could add a huge amount of time and cost. And clearly Tivo are not interested. You can get FTA on Panny DVR, DISH DVR, I feel it would be far easier to get someone, somewhere, somehow (great song) to add the extra bits (grid, search) to Sky, Panny and Dish. Rather than start from the ground up on an old system, great that many think it is.

I may be wrong, but I am sure any Tivo issues went to Hybrid. Hybrid were the provider, Telecom a reseller. So if you had a billing issue with Tivo, call Telecom, if you had a support issue, call Hybrid

I recall that at one stage telecom used to provide support too, as I remember calling them for one problem and that was using the 0800 TiVo number. . They were also the retailer for some buyers.

It also says lifetime service in the actual tivo interface itself .

I explained that in an earlier post... It says that because Oz and NZ don't have a subscription like they do in the US and, at the end of the day, it's US firmware, and that is the only way they could do it (because no subscription), but Hybrid couldn't change the wording. BECAUSE U.S. FIRMWARE.

Nice try tho... they tried it on whirlpool a week ago until one of the hybrid people explained it... about 3 times.

Makes a lot of sense. Its free. If it had a sub, thats funds, funds that can be used for profit, and management of the service( expense)

Going back to CGA claims. the free service may be a defence. The CGA could argue that Tivo have to reimburse the costs of the service, now discontinued, which is x months x zero

While the licence is vs the box, I am sure these guys have that covered. But as I think @Mattnz said, if Hybrid only had a 10year licence from Tivo that should have been stated. People being people,e probably would not have cared as "I won't have it then, 10 years is very old for tech" But some do care, as Freeview have licked down the EPG to Panny, DISH and Sky. There have been MANY threads about copyright, geolocking, and so on, but here we have a free service, with an available EPG, that cannot be used on the free service, apart from three suppliers, and that the features of the fourth provider, Tivo, cannot or will not be available to be supplied. A tad bizzare

Not really, as the terms and conditions I posted earlier say that they'll provide a service until they no longer provide a service.

While they didn't date it, come Oct they'll no longer provide a service.

Great stuff. But this is for geeks only. And its for FTA. It's very niche as Tivo is rare, and those with rare Tivo's are 95% not into this as its over their head.

Which makes it very niche of niche

But I applaud  the efforts

Dynamic:

sarahfoxnz: Ive emailed Freeview NZ, & asked about extending the EPG.

Got a reply saying that there are no plans to extend the EPG guide to more than 8 days.

Thank you for trying!  Don't suppose you want to contact Tivo USA and ask if they will help us out?  :)

I asked Tivo (Aus) 7 the number of fiolk curently using tivio is sensitive (wont tell me)..

Not sure if 100, 1000, or 10,000 people in NZ use TIVo.

i havn't contacted Tivo USA yet.. But i'm wondering why they dont sell in NZ/Australia.

Is there any TECHNICAL differences between USA & NZ TV ?  any reason why they cant just find a distributor here & sell their USA tivos here ? all that needs to change is the NZ tv people update their schedules to a USa website & the Tivo units collect the data/EPG from USA instead of Australia,

The NZ distributor only needs to sell the units.

Or is that just too simple ?
