Reading the Whirlpool forums on this topic, some enthusiasts look to be working on a way to get the EPG onto these box, by using a mod. But this potentially means that other boxes in other markets could also do this, and those markets maybe paying a monthly subscription. So you have to wonder why Tivo aren't looking at preventing that need, by just providing the EPG. Wouldn't that actually be cheaper for them? It doesnt' look like they want to engage in any conversation with the NZ market, based on the comments on their facebook page. They have posted that there are options, and then pasted a link to the OZ Tivo page which does have an option of another box and voucher, but NZ don't have any options.
It would be interesting to know who owns the customer database once hybrid closes, does this then go back to Tivo?

You TIVO owners come across as having been trapped in some kind of technology cave for the past eight years, now the cave has been opened and you're stumbling around, wondering where all the other TIVO-like devices are, apparently unaware that life has passed you by and the whole concept of recording things is just a thing of the past.

If you want to watch something that was on FTA TV, you'll find it on any of the respective OnDemand services, you don't need to record anything! Heck, you can even watch things you forgot to record!

TIVO and its entire ilk is the past. Even in the US it has been a long, long time since it was considered cutting edge or even relevant. An article published by The Verge three years ago described it as a "fossil of a Web 1.0 startup ambling along on diminishing shreds of patent revenue." Like the Nokia of the late 2000s it failed to see the writing on the wall.

What an ill-informed post!

I was struck by how unreliable these supposed superior internet-based replacements are when reading this thread about the TVNZ OnDemand app failing to continue to play after the first ad break. I've experienced exactly the same problem with this app on my parents' DishTV box.

Sure, we don't 'tape' a heck many programmes now relative to what we used to, but in no way have TiVos been made fully redundant; it's also a technology that generally just works, whereas in my experience watching the equivalent content via VOD is much more of a lottery (witness the TVNZ issue linked to above).

I'll certainly be replacing our TiVos with some kind of recording device, but am hoping something better comes along than the current options (am I right in thinking it's just the DishTV and Panasonic units?)

Not everyone here is a geek, many are new or entry level IT, or here for help and support, and/or to learn.

Geeks may well consider MythTV, but I suspect many are thinking about their elderly parents or non-technical friends and would prefer something that they can hand over and, with a minimum of input/support, plug in and play. Like TiVo...

I did try installing mythtv some years ago on my PC, it was buggy and a hassle. It also does not fit in the tv cabinet, had no remote, and , i don't like to watch tv sitting at the pc.

And, the quality of broadcast tv is not what it used to be so the enthusiasm has waned in that regard too.

My $60 tivo unit (trademe) was the ideal solution.

Ok, poor choice of words - perhaps "What a condescending post!" more accurately reflects my thoughts.

It's the same as the push by some here that MythTV is the answer for TiVO - and even possibly the panacea for world hunger: the assumption that all others have the same needs, abilities, access to technology, interest, money etc that they do, so that their answer to this problem is the right one.

Yep, you're right - your pedalling of this same line throughout this thread certainly indicates someone being stuck in the same groove!

Yeah, MythTV would be just the answer for my three relatively technophobic sisters who all have TiVos... Yep, my wife will just LOVE the idea of moving to a computer-based recorder to replace the TiVO, especially when it craps out and I'll spend half the evening saying "just five minutes more dear!" while trying to get it fixed, .. that I have the spare time or even inclination to set up such a system...

Many people - in fact a huge majority of people - just want (and indeed need) to be able to plug in a product and have it work.

The geek can easily build the MythTV box for the elderly parents or non-technical friends to plug in "Like TiVo".

The MyhTV user interface (as stated previously) is easy to understand and navigate.

Don't worry. This will probably be my last post in this thread but I do wonder why you think that MythTV "craps out"?

Mine has never done that.

Is it because you expect something you put together to be inferior to something you buy off the shelf?

Do you think that an open source device is less reliable?

The thing with becoming an assembler of MythTV for elderly and relatives is you also become the MythTV support for elderly and relatives.

I could've done it for the inlaws, but I don't have time to source bits, price compare, install, teach and support. If something goes wrong with the system they have now, they have the suppliers facebook, then me, then the shop it came from if it craps out.

If I assemble something, there's me, me, then various suppliers of parts but that would be down to me.

Edit: Just to buy tuner card(s) with the amount of tuners in my, and the inlaws, PVR (4, able to record 3-6 channels depending on group, while watching another) would cost over half the price of my current box. Factor in a case, PSU, GPU, CPU, Mobo, remote, RAM, HDD.... phew.

So, MythTV is a Linux based software that " turns a computer with the necessary hardware into a network streaming [1] digital video recorder, a digital multimedia home entertainment system," (Wiki)

My concerns as someone who only knows what I just pasted, that its a "Tivo, etc" in a PC. Given the PC runs an OS and all the paraphernalia that goes with that, a concern.

Does it run Freeview and all channels and how does the EPG get updated?

It is browser based? As apps seem far superior than browser based video

I'll admit I never gave the MythTV much thought, PC's are great to do a lot of things, and probably not much optimally, being a workhorse for many tasks.

I use a Mac at home, so a Mac Mini with a good sized HDD, and maybe an external as well, would be interesting to see. As it will be small.

How do you manage it with a remote?
