I recommend that you check out the overview then join the NZ MythTV community http://lists.ourshack.com/mailman/listinfo/mythtvnz

and start asking questions. (Your questions will depend on your current understanding and skill level but you will find a welcoming community happy to help) I have found that everyone on the mailing list has been treated with respect, no matter what their skill level.

If you have the required hardware there will probably even be someone in your area happy to join you for a couple of hours with coffee and bikkies and you would then have a working system which can be expanded to use multiple Frontends.

OK - seeing as how you asked so politely.

I will answer each of your questions:-

My concerns as someone who only knows what I just pasted, that its a "Tivo, etc" in a PC. Given the PC runs an OS and all the paraphernalia that goes with that, a concern.

It can be installed as an application on a Linux PC but the easiest way is to have it on a dedicated machine. This is often a second hand computer running headless in a garage or cupboard (and can be used for other server type purposes as well - mine is a file server and a media server - Emby)

Does it run Freeview and all channels and how does the EPG get updated?

It can have all (or some) of the Freeview Channels. EPG can be updated by an automatically run "Grabber" which downloads an xmltv file or via EIT. THe EIT method is simpler and since Freeview have made 7-8 days available is my favoured method.

It is browser based? As apps seem far superior than browser based video

No it is not browser based although there is "Mythweb" which is a browser based interface which can be used very intuitively to manage recordings.

I'll admit I never gave the MythTV much thought, PC's are great to do a lot of things, and probably not much optimally, being a workhorse for many tasks.

TiVo is simply a computer with closed source software to become a PVR. MythTV is open source software on a computer to act as a very sophisticated PVR.

I use a Mac at home, so a Mac Mini with a good sized HDD, and maybe an external as well, would be interesting to see. As it will be small.

Yes you can install on a MAC but probably cheaper to build on a PC with a dedicated MythTV "OS" e.g. have a look at https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Operating_system

You will see that there are about 15 Linux distros and 3 non Linux ones recommended.

How do you manage it with a remote?

If you have a common backend/frontend system you can use a LIRC or FLIRC remote. I use a Harmony remotes on 3 of my Frontends and Bluetooth remotes with FireTV, or Android TV devices.

It'll essentially be a donated TIVO to the Oz experiment, but they are now effectively worthless, so I'm keen to step up and get one to him for our side of the experiment!

I just want to reduce handing issues and mail costs from here to Melbourne. Can anyone play courier for a TIVO board?

I don't think it is worth the effort, unless Darren has actually said he is keen. The NZ TiVoHD is identical to the Oz one; one of ours was purchased in Hobart because it was $400 cheaper than here at the time. Darren will be able to get them fairly inexpensively from Gumtree or Ebay or whatever they use over there.

If you mean you want to get the TiVo back for use here, and live in Christchurch, I can replace the PROM for you.

The NZ TIVO's component output could not pass 1080i from Freeview. Under the Freeview license it was limited/restricted.

There are however other NZ Freeview boxes that do (seemingly in breach of the Freeview component requirement to limit resolution) pass 1080i.

Does your Australian TIVO output 1080i? I'm keen to know if the same limitation was imposed in Australia.

I can use a TIVO HD component output in another streaming environment via Slingbox.

I doubt it. Considering the age of the TiVo 320 and the cost of suitable ex-lease or TradeMe PCs only 3 years old I wouldn't even bother.

I had a look round for a STB that did HD over component about 6 years ago after my last one died but couldn't find any.

Thanx for that. I see these units are fairly old the GZ discussion on these goes back to 2012 but the DTV Solutions board goes back to 2008 but at $100 it may be worth it.. .

I bought them for my Slingbox/Vulkano streaming units as I wanted 1080i out via component and TIVO didn't do it.

These have a great looking image, record and have an odd Matrix display that shows thumbnails of 6 channels playing content.

Only downside is a screensaver that I can't seem to turn off.

Last one I bought was $30..so this Vantage HD is a bit rich.

But I would argue a better image than TIVO.

I love TIVO, but it does have minor quibbles.

The 1080i image when compared to other devices PS3, Vantage and Draco Freeview is soft (slightly).

The main menu is SD. Channel change is sluggish. It won't play WAV files over the network and other quibbles that make it just shy of perfect.

The reduced component resolution was a real pain - so in the end I bought a Slingbox 500 which accepted HDMI and worked perfectly.
