Sometimes when I am watching a channel say TV2, when I flick over to TV3 I can rewind back and catch the news for the past 30 minutes.

Other times I can't. What am I doing wrong?

What is the trick regarding the change channel and then have the programme buffered for 30 minutes or so?

AFAIK it just buffers the last channel you were watching. So if you flick from 1 - 2 then to 1 again you will be right but if you go 1 - 2-3 then back to 1 you will have no buffer.

The TiVo only buffers the channels the tuners are set to. So if the tuners are on TV1 and TV3, then they're the only channels being buffered. if you change channel from TV3 to TV2 then you lose that TV 3 buffer, but TV1 should still be bufferring. In this example if you flick between 1 & 3 (using the Live TV button or just hitting buttons 1 and 3, not the channel up/down button) the buffers should remain intact on both.

Freeview HD sees all the channels arrive on 3 separate streams. Possibly you'll be fine if you jump between channels on the two streams the two tuners are working on?
This would leave you with no rewind buffer for channels on the 3rd stream. No idea how TIVO handles this, as it's all software that dictates behaviour at that stage.

Freeview Satellite crams most of the channels onto just two freeview streams, so a twin tuner PVR on the satellite service can be quite powerful if the software is written well.

Sorry, I have a TIVO too, but I've never used the live buffer for much. I don't tend to watch much of anything live anymore, it's all recorded to ensure I can skip all the ads.
I'll be doing this with the Rugby tonight for instance on poor mans Sky TV Prime, in glorious SD and stereo.
