Hi all

A couple of days ago my modded Tivo lost power and shut down. When I rebooted it seem to come up fine with all the hack messages displaying. Pressed the guide button and it rebooted. It worked for a while after that and then rebooted again, no button was pressed on the remote that time. At least two more times since then it has rebooted when the guide button as pressed.

Could this be corrupted guide data?

If I clear the guide will that mean it will take a week to rebuild as it only brings down a days worth at a time?

edited as I did not proof read before posting.

I had a similar issue with mine a few days ago, where it kept rebooting and about 5 times whenever I tried to access the TiVo menu or guide, and displayed that hacked message after the reboot. So I just left it to settle down, and it seems fine again now.  I read that reboots are often a sign of a failing harddrive, so I will see how it goes.

Thanks for the info. I'll see how it goes over the next few days, it behaved itself last night.

Random reboots can also be the power supply. I repaired one about three years ago (which is still working well) by replacing the power supply capacitors. But your symptoms do sound more like a failing HDD.

A hdd failure will be easier for me to fix, I have a second unmodded tivo so could swap the drives after updating it. I'll keep my fingers crossed hoping it will settle down.

TiVo has a built-in SMART diagnostic tool which might show if there's a problem. It is a pass/fail tool with none of the SMART counters or analogue values displayed, which in my experience with tools like this means it will inevitably show a Pass up to the disk's very last gasp, but it might be worth a crack anyway.

I've been trying to send a message with the procedure to access this for the last few days, but Geekzone has been forcing a browser timeout every time I've tried. Google "TiVo kickstart 54" and the procedures you will find there are near to but not exactly what I have found actually works.
