Hi all

A couple of days ago my modded Tivo lost power and shut down. When I rebooted it seem to come up fine with all the hack messages displaying. Pressed the guide button and it rebooted. It worked for a while after that and then rebooted again, no button was pressed on the remote that time. At least two more times since then it has rebooted when the guide button as pressed.

Could this be corrupted guide data?

If I clear the guide will that mean it will take a week to rebuild as it only brings down a days worth at a time?

Cheers

Mike

I had a similar issue with mine a few days ago, where it kept rebooting and about 5 times whenever I tried to access the TiVo menu or guide, and displayed that hacked message after the reboot. So I just left it to settle down, and it seems fine again now.  I read that reboots are often a sign of a failing harddrive, so I will see how it goes.

Thanks for the info. I'll see how it goes over the next few days, it behaved itself last night.

Random reboots can also be the power supply. I repaired one about three years ago (which is still working well) by replacing the power supply capacitors. But your symptoms do sound more like a failing HDD.

A hdd failure will be easier for me to fix, I have a second unmodded tivo so could swap the drives after updating it. I'll keep my fingers crossed hoping it will settle down.

TiVo has a built-in SMART diagnostic tool which might show if there's a problem. It is a pass/fail tool with none of the SMART counters or analogue values displayed, which in my experience with tools like this means it will inevitably show a Pass up to the disk's very last gasp, but it might be worth a crack anyway.

I've been trying to send a message with the procedure to access this for the last few days, but Geekzone has been forcing a browser timeout every time I've tried. Google "TiVo kickstart 54" and the procedures you will find there are near to but not exactly what I have found actually works.

Had a similar issue with two of my TiVo's in the last week

Both seemed to have no picture on the 2nd Tuner (i.e. black picture) - usually you have a message re the signal.

It was when I was hopping between live TV (Swaps tuners) the TiVo's rebooted

I've had my TiVo's for many years and never had this happen, 1 unit I've had since they were first brought out.

I think my cause was a power problem. Part of the work I was doing needed the power point the Tivo is plugged into to be loosened from the wall. The phase cable was loose, I tightened and since then no more random reboots.

Glad it sounds like you've resolved your problem but having a loose phase wire is far from ideal.  Had a similar experience when lifting power points and light switches from walls to get a paint brush under while redecorating.  Found a light switch which when on caused the light occasionally flicker which it hadn't done before.  Turned out the phase had popped out as obviously hadn't been screwed in tightly enough admittedly to a cable with minimal slack.
