Hi All,

Our fax machine has died, and rather than buy a new one that prints out the faxes, I would like to install a fax modem that would be attached to a secondary server (probably actually a Win7 Pro or Ubuntu machine) and have it receive all incoming faxes.

That seems fairly easy.

However, what I would then like to have it do is send those faxes on to our mail server via smtp (they would all go to a single mailbox - faxes@example.com).

My preference for the software side would be free and / or open source as I don't actually have a budget for this - I'll have to 'borrow' from another budget code.

I can find a modem for $40 such as this:

DSE - USB Modem

This is just an example - I am not fixed on that particular modem.

I would guess that it would work with Win7 Pro easily, but then what software do I need to get the faxes to the mailserver?

Alternatively, perhaps finding the software might be easier on Ubuntu, but will the modem work?

I have looked at using an external party to receive the faxes and forward them on by email, but would prefer to keep it internal if possible.

Thanks for any suggestions or advice,

Alan.

If the faxes are received as a file, and saved locally, you could use something like BEEE- Better Email Enable Everything to email the saved files.

Have used it for a couple of minor projects.

Arrghh, it's loaded with crapware !!!! Be careful what you click Accept on. It's been a while since I used it, and certainly didn't have the crapware payload in the past.

I use 2talk. 028 number. Ends up not costing me a thing and the senders pay which suits me since they are clearly silly to want to send faxes.

This is another send email app, that I have recently used. - supports Windows / Linux, though I have only used under Win 2003 server and Win 2008 server environs.

http://caspian.dotconf.net/menu/Software/SendEmail/

It's all command line, so you'll probably need to write a .bat file to send the fax file, and delete the sent file. Add the .bat file as a scheduled task.

We use World Exchange fax to email service which costs $5.00 per month for unlimited pages and we get an email with a TIFF. Works great, very easy to setup and would be my recommendation to use this or a similar service rather than try to set this all up on a server!

This. It works as it says on the box. You could port your existing number to them, and just receive an electronic copy every time there is an incoming fax.

Not obvious to find on the website https://www.wxc.co.nz/residential/voice/hostedvoice/faxtoemail/

also use WxC FaxtoEmail and its great but do like the idea above of using 2talk and charging the backwards sender for the privilege!
