Hi I have never figured out how to do this before (moving clips onto a time line and hit encode using a bundled software was the most I could manage during DVD days), but just entertaining my curiosity.

I see on facebook and youtube that people can come up with very elegant short videos. Elegant fade, words appearing, coloration, even magic CGI impossible things.

What are the popular softwares these people use?

I use VideoPad by NCH Software - simple interface and easy to use.

I use adobe premiere pro. Friend used to use vegas but changed to premiere pro because he had no end of crashing issues with vegas.

But there are free alternatives, I've just never bothered to look into them.

I have just started a YouTube channel where I am learning as I go with putting videos together on a tight budget. Still a lot of work to do on improving the audio when talking to camera. I have just had arrive a microphone from Aliexpress.

I have used Premiere Pro in the past and its really powerful but is definitely for the power user and is a bit of a resource hog. I wanted something that I could use on my daily train trip (40min each way) on my underpowered laptop for 4k and 1080p footage I shoot on my mobile and Chinese action cam.

I found Filmora

There is a trial you can download and its super easy to use. can handle editing 4k video on old hardware by having a scaled down resolution in the preview/editing screen. Its super easy to add titles, fades, clip art type graphics etc. Its only $49USD so super cheap as well with new releases of effects on a regular basis that you can download. Definitely the easiest editor I have used but also produces a quality output.

Took me like 5 years to figure out the basics of Photoshop ... I hope it won't take 15 years to produce a short clip on Premiere Pro! Maybe I'll get a magazine to show me some steps ... that's how I eventually got the hang of the very basics of Photoshop (and cannot recall any steps when I put the mag down!)

At the most basic you just drag things into the timeline and use the razer tool to cut them and then delete the bits you do not want, and then export it.

The default youtube presets seem to be a little low on the bitrate. Clearly targetted at US internet upload speeds, I have the cousin exporting everything at 30 megabit h264 and it looks noticiably better than the stock preset youtube 1080 setting.

The only issue I have with premiere is their stubborn refusal to support framerates other than broadcast ones, so watermarking 120fps actioncam footage is not possible in it, since it will only export at 60 and its default was that horrid frame blending crap.

Issue I saw with the ipad for video editing was getting footage from a PC onto it. You could copy videos in itunes and theywere not available to the editor, something else to get them into the camera roll and they would play but not work with the editor, since they were the wrong codec or whatever.

I have retired my ipad. Desktop or laptop for me. Granted, a great tool for the simple minded!
