I don't intend to do a lot of photoshopping, just the odd time, so don't want a drawing tablet, just a mouse that works really well when doing so.

My screen is just under 140 ppi.

COnfused about 1000 dpi optical vs say a 200-2500 dpi laser "gaming mouse"

"Gaming Mice" are just marketed products with the word "Gaming" on them.

Grab a Logitech MX Master - Honestly, you won't regret it. It is surely a more expensive mouse however every other mouse will feel horrible once you use it. Also, avoid the hell out of Razer.

What do you have against razer? I have heaps of their stuff and it all works fine. Except the headphones. Those were terrible. Worst sound ever short of a pair of fake beats.

The DPI of a mouse has nothing to do with the DPI of your screen, unless you were aiming for a 1:1 movement between the mouse and the pointer on the screen but that would be horrible with you having to move the mouse 22" to get from one side to the other instead of the 20-30mm you normally would do.

I have had that mouse in the past and it was good except no where as good as the MX Master which is only a little more in dollar value. I also do a bit of work with the Adobe suite. I ended up buying one of these mice for home and couldn't stand using my mouse at work after that so bought a second - about to buy a third for my new Desktop build. Really, once you go to the premium Logitech mice you will never go back.

In comparison with the MX Master this mouse is /fine/ and was my work mouse before I replaced it. Things like the side scroll (which is a wheel off to the side), freescrolling for long web pages and really really good tracking (even on glass - and I do use this on glass too) makes it a far better experience. Scrolling around large images and also have the precision of being able to do fine touches in Photoshop is really what makes a mouse. Really, if you're doing photoshop / indesign work then this is the only mouse you should consider - an honest review from myself and many others who have switched and never looked back.

I also have a Microsoft Surface Pro for more finer work and have the MX Master paired via Bluetooth to this. The flexibility of being able to use the Logitech Unifying receiver or Bluetooth is really handy and having it pared with 3 devices (and being able to easily switch between them) is also a feature I really like. Sure, some of the features you'll never end up using but I can tell you now you'll never end up using all of the programmable buttons on that gaming mouse either.

Really really bad reliability issues, firmware issues and design issues. They're just not that good IMO. There are far better options out there. I've owned several Razer products and they've all had an issue. The Razer Mamba mouse for example is plagued with firmware issues that make it a really horrible mouse to use (ask anyone who has owned one, look on the reddit threads etc). Sure, this is only one example but there are many more out there.

I was given a dell laser mouse recently, which is actually made by logitech, and have found it to be one of the better mice I have used. It has a button where you can adjust the sensitivity. Can be used by either hand, which is a plus considering I use both for the mouse. I always go for corded now, as too much hassle changing battery and can get interference off my metal desk. But logitech are the best mice IMO, the only parts that generally fails in the wheel, which if rubber can swell.

Hey thanks for all that so the answer to the Q was lol - optical!

One more question: is there such a thing as a quiet keyboard? The keyboards that I tested that are within my budget (as cheap as possible!) makes a very clunky sound esp the spacebar. I don't type a lot. Only type in forums/facebook and to enter web addresses! I would like a touch pad to use it from afar - that's not a gimmick is it? Though I do lose the numerical keypad *sigh

Lasts? In what way? battery life?

The ones with a long battery life are normally the office worker type mice. Laggy, low sample rate, very fussy about surface etc.

Good point. Since it uses AA batteries I have a few boxes of the DSE ones to burn ... I am really serious about as few wires as possible
