The answer to this question sounds obvious to me, but if I am wrong, ill be annoyed! : )

Basically I want a filter system and was looking at the Cokin P for my Canon EOS 600D.
Ive had a look around and it seems to be the most available, but please feel free to let me know if ive missed a contender.

Question 1:
Does the Cokin P attachment have to be vertical? or can I rotate it on the lens?

Im doing a lot of waterfall photography, so depending where I am, im normally in the hills. So the hill might be putting shadow line on or near the photo point.
I like long exposure photos, which isnt possible when the suns out (without filters) So im making sure I get a system I can use for my needs.

I would have a ND Gradient filter in there. But it would have to follow the shadow line, So its not normally straight, some times its 45degrees or so.

Question 2:
Can I use regular 58mm (in my case) filters behind the Cokin P adapter?
Im also wanting to get some regular 58mm screw on filters. But if they are not going to work, ill have to look at getting the same type in a cokin P system.

Assuming it's just a bigger version of the Cokin A series the ansers are:

1) No, it can be any way you want. There are little friction clips on each side to hold the filter in place. A ring attaches to the lens and the filter holder can spin on the ring.
2) Yes but if you add too many filters you may start to see dark areas in the corner of the photo because the sensor is seeing the filter mount. This will depend on your lens and how thick the filters are.

I think ill get my other filters as Cokin P ones as well then. So I can have a ND and ND gradient on at the same time (depending on situation)

Is there anywhere recommended to get these from?
Or just Trademe?
Would have to be online. I went into a camera shop here in Tauranga and asked if they had any ND filters and they just looked at my like I was crazy. 'O, makes it darker, you must mean a polarizing filter...' yeah....nah..

I just ordered a couple of things from amazon.com, I tried to ask these as well, but they wont send them overseas.

The Cokin P system is really very very versatile.

I have two Cokin adaptors, one wideangle one, and one normal one. The wideangle adaptor can take two P filters, and the normal one three (from memory). I've stacked three ND's and done some reallllllly long exposures.

You get a ring that goes on the end of your lens, whether stacked with threaded filters or not, and then the plastic Cokin adaptor slides over the top and is rotatable to any angle. You cannot have each Cokin filter on the adaptor rotate individually, only as a group.

I bought Cokin lens caps so that I don't need to take the adaptor ring off of the lens at all. Some lens caps don't like the smooth inner surface of the ring so Cokin make a lens cap that slides on. They can be a pain at first but I like them now.

Anyway, I'd say the Cokin system is exactly what you want.
