Watch the batteries on charge in your chromebooks.

This happened to me this morning, fortunately I was in the room so managed to get things under control before the chromebook set the bedside furniture on fire (scorched it though)

Purchased today- one new Chromebook and two new Fire Extinguishers

It's kind of a reminder to everyone to keep an eye on things you charge, because there's always a chance it can catch fire.

Samsung Model XE501C13-Ko1US manufactured May 2018, in perfect condition before it caught fire.

It should t have happened regardless but were you using the original charger? Was it sitting on a bed?

Yes original charger, and was sitting beside the bed after use but left on charge.

Wonder if worth reporting to Worksafe, as may happen to others who might not be so lucky

If we can programme a cpu to adjust to heat you'd think we would do the same for charging. I know its a bit different but still - temp > x stop all power.  May not stop all fires, but would prevent some for sure.

I'm pretty sure iPhones already do this. I can remember leaving my phone on charge in a hot room at a holiday park one summer, and when I came back from the beach there was an advisory message on the screen telling me that the charging had paused due to the heat.

It would be interesting to know whether the device in question had such a feature and, if so, why did it fail to detect the excess of heat.

Yes Energy Safety should be contacted IMO, who are under the Worksafe umbrella. Not sure why they are under worksafe TBH as IMO it just causes confusion.

Might be worthwhile contacting Samsung.  When our dishwasher (about 6 years old) caught fire the manufacturer wanted it back for forensics and provided us with a brand new dishwasher.

Thank you for raising this, my daughter has a similar model, possibly a couple of years newer and it has been on my mind when she leaves it charging on the bench when not around
