My wife is a wannabe coffee junkie. She doesn't want a coffee brewer too cumbersome.

wants the nespresso type where you buy a pot and get coffee coming out ...

are they any good? are they reliable? any good (50% off) deals anywhere?

i keep telling her to make herself isn't it so much cheaper to not have to buy those little pots?

I tried it out in the shop, the coffee is very tasty. I was surprised.

They're dead simple to use, no mess and no extra half a pot of coffee either. We still went with the drip machine in the end, the kind with the reusable filter and grind our own beans. No reason other than I think we are getting set in our ways!

Nothing but pure marketing genius in my opinion.

They're good for lazy people that don't appreciate good coffee. You can't convince me that ground coffee in a capsule with no roast date present and no idea of its origin is good.

They also have huge waste impact as the capsules can't be recycled, if your argument to that is to use reusable pods then you would be better off buying an espresso from a shop or grinding and making your own coffee either way. I would rather support local business e.g. Supreme, Flight Coffee etc than put more money into an overseas corporates pocket

Nespresso is a good coffee in that it consistently gives good results. It may not be the best coffee in the world, but from experience (having had two machines so far) you get a coffee that is better than most cafes around town can get. Only the really good baristas with good coffee can get better results.

As for the recycling, you can drop the capsules in store (now that they have one in AKL and one in WLG) and they will arrange recycling.

I've had one for over 3 years now; nothing beats it on a cold winter morning before all the rush to work, one capsule and press of one button, a strong espresso is done in a minute. I don't use it with milk only to make blacks

And the varieties in capsules are good too

I also own a semi-automatic coffee machine, with which my partner and myself make our coffee during the weekend, with coffee beans from Vivace and Supreme; it works well for the weekend when you have a bit more relaxed time.

Dontknow about deals on machines, but you can get Nesspresso compatible machines from a number out places including supermarkets.

And whilst original capsules are best, you'll find lower cost options too. Best of these would be the Robert Harris ones (available at supermarkets), probably because they are created for the NZ palate.

As for dates and origin, Nesspresso do put 'best-by' dates on their packaging, and some put 'source'. I've used these machines for over 10 years, and like Maurico rate them for their consistency, which suits my morning coffee requirement.

I have a Caffitaly MAP machine bought from Harvey Norman. The capsules are not interchangeable with the nespresso ones. HN sells packets of 10 for $8.50, and Briscoes sell another brand for $7.00 (on one of their pemanent 30% off deals).

The Caffitaly machine was rated highly by Consumer and the capsules have 8g coffee whereas I think that the nespresso ones have 5g.

The quality is definitely as good as or better than cafe coffee. I mainly make flat whites and are quick and easy to use. Harvey Norman often have a range of different machines set up in shop so you can try the nespresso and caffitaly models out for yourself.

There is a Nespresso outside Starbucks in Lambton Quay. I invite you to order coffee one shop and walk to the next and compare.

Basically like JamesL beautifully summed up, I would like to amend that to:

"They're good for lazy people with high disposable incomes that don't appreciate good coffee."

And that suits me to buy one for the home as a conversation starter. Nothing more. The marketing from Nestle is amazing trying to get buy in from using celebrities and prominent prime locations as their store.

Just wait for the smart Asian countries to come up with knock off capsules and might make better justification to use it like an ink jet printer :)

We had a Nespresso several years ago.
Like the variety and quality of the coffee but the prices started to go up and when it died we didnt replace it with another one.
Found a Nice semi automatic Krupps Machine instead. Takes either Whole beans or ground. All we have to do is Froth the Milk. 2nd Hand on trademe.
As an aside we did get a cheap "nespresso" like machine from the Wharehouse which does the Job ( Our Krupps) needed a Repair. Obviously not the same quality, variety as Nespresso but does the Job. Now I source several varieties of the Pods as a back up- Countdown, Avalanche & Robert Harris.

Why do people feel the need to be rude and insulting about those who purchase something they don't?

You could have just said it is not for me or does not match my palette.

It sounds as though a bean-to-cup machine would satisfy you both.

Cheap: You just buy the beans
Easy: you just press one button and it does it all for you.

Of course, that really only applies to black coffee. You can get clever Nespresso machines that do all kinds of stuff with milk and that has got to be easier than doing that part yourself hasn't it?

We had one of the high volume commercial ones at work (in Munich) and the first cup after the machine had been taken apart and manually cleaned and filled with fresh cold milk was great. The second and subsequent cups carried off tastes from milk. I always assumed that the self cleaning was not 100% effective. Cleaning the dairy side of the machine was a lot more involved than with a traditional machine that just had a steamer nozzle to wipe clean.

Sure, you can be cynical. But they do have this spelled out here and have their whole thing about sustainability here.

If you're cynical about their recycling initiatives then I wouldn't mind you being cynical about the mobile telcos recycling ones, the city councils electronics disposal days ones, etc, etc...

Basically, my thinking is that they say they do and put money into that. So unless you can prove they don't then I can't see why not.

people are pretty quick to bag big corporates for their recycling processes but I would guess that most big corporates are heavily invested in sustainability projects around the world

BTT, I have a Nespresso copy machine and using Nespresso capsules it delivers a great cup of coffee in around the same time and less hassle than boiling the jug

Nespresso has the quality/convenience ratio just about right and i doubt you will ever get a complaint from visitors (providing you don't invite JamesL or NZtechfreak around for a cuppa :P)
