Is it bad to put different bulbs on a 3 bulb lamp?

If its a hanging one you might get it being lop sided due to weight differences. If its on a dimmer they may not dim the same and may interact in a way that makes them flicker more than if they were all the same type.

@joker97 the lamps that i was referring to that are no longer made are the philips 260v incandescent lamps, the replacement of that lamp is the ECO Classic Halogen energy saver (as per a philips rep has told me and confirmed that these should be able to handle the voltage spikes and so on)

@geekiT yes they will, as they still contain a fliament but the filament is in a halogen gas have a look at the models listed http://www.pdl.co.nz/products-nav.aspx?id=787

this has most of the pdl 600 series models of dimmers, as you will read for low voltage 12v halogens with electronic transformers you will need a leading trailing dimmer and standard lamps require a leading edge dimmer

From what you said, it sounds like I need a 'leading edge' dimmer for standard lamps?

@geekIT from memory it shouldn't matter if you are using a trailing edge or a leading edge on standard lamps (providing they are not CFL) they will both work and do the same thing, the main difference between the dimmers is that the leading edge will work with wire wound transformers only and the trailing edge will work with electronic transformers only meaning you cant use a leading edge on a electronic transformer as it just will not work.

What kind of dimmer should use you use LED downlights, when both the light and the driver are designed to dim? I have a kiwi electronics dimmer, set to trailing edge by my electrician (it seemed to work better). After the lights have been on a while (30 - 60 minutes) they start to flicker, and nothing I can do short of turning them off for a few minute stops them flickering.

i have never used a kiwi electronics dimmer module nor heard of them until now, i have only used pdl as its a well known product and never had any problems with them, it all depends on the control gear really, led drivers are electronic now days so they will require a leading edge dimmer.

as for your down lights it all depends on the build quality, most of the Chinese stuff is crap and wont last as well as a more expensive product such as a halcyon led driver

Might have to try the PDL, thanks. Leading edge flickered all the time, this one only flickers occasionally but when it does, it's pretty bad.
