I have recently bought a new house and the light switches have an LED in the middle of the switch. At the moment when the lights are off, the LED lights up and when it is on, it turns off. Is that how these things supposed to work or has the electrician not wired them properly. Pic of the light switch as per below:

I believe they can be wired either way (so LED can be on or off when switch is on). Most have them wired like yours so they are visible in the dark.

Are they Schneider switches? If so, there should be different coloured panels available. Check with a electrical wholesaler (like Ideal or JA Russell).

The switches in the OP are PDL 800 series Modena.

Yuck.
