Our kitchen is 35 years old and looking its age. The Kitchen (13.5 sq mt) / Family room area is 27 sq metres. There are a lot of drawers, cabinets, plus tall cabinets and an island on top of a cabinet.

My wife is thinking of a Kaboodle (Bunnings) Kitchen and for them to supply and recommend an installer.

I want to do due diligence first on Kaboodle and anybody else.

It's been a few years since Kaboodle was mentioned in Geekzone and one comment for Kaboodle was 'cheap and flimsy'.

Briefly looking in Bunnings Westgate (Auckland), the demonstration kitchen setups don't look to be cheap price wise and then there will be flooring, painting, new sink, mixer, some new appliances, new LED downlighting, blinds etc etc.

I did a Kaboodle kitchen myself a year or so ago. Overall reasonably happy with it, but it is towards the economical end of the spectrum.

The carcasses are all melamine laminated chipboard (I believe the moisture resistant stuff). You then have a choice of spec for doors, drawer fronts and benchtops - I ended up going for the vinyl wrapped MDF option which is noticeably better quality than the carcasses.

Pros:

  • Big range with lots of reasonably clever options for blind corners, bins, pantries etc.
  • Online design tool is good once you get your head around it
  • Bunnings staff (at least the ones I dealt with) much more knowledgable and helpful than I was expecting
  • Higher spec MDF option is good
  • No/very few questions asked about returns, exchanges and damage replacements
  • Very cost effective
  • Not really any custom options, but plenty of adjustable options and filler panels to fit most spaces

Cons:

  • Carcasses only okay quality
  • Some oddities - my 450mm drawers are a completely different style to the 900mm drawers ordered at the same time
  • Overall the instructions are good, but one cabinet (microwave) was a totally different design with terrible instructions that took Quite Some Figuring. Eventually managed to resolve the issue when I realised not all cam holes were actually drilled at factory.
