Hi,

Can anyone recommend a company that does the $title? Due to council regulations in my area it's mandatory for the window frame to be wood and the end result to look identical to the existing one (100 year old sash window).

Thanks.

That may be a big ask for a retrofit job due to the thickness of the double glazing.
However I used Metro Glasstech for our double glazing in aluminium frames and they did an excellent job.
Would be worth enquiring of them what if anything they can do with wooden sashes.
Will be interested to know if you do manage to get the job done.

Sorry, forgot to mention I don't want to retrofit, I want to change the frames completely as they are quite old and recently required a bit of work to be done as they started to rot.

Thanks.

OK.
That probably makes the job easier then.
Only problem is finding someone that can handle the job professionally.
Good luck.
Perhaps someone at the Historic Places Trust may have some advice? They usually have contacts for that sort of work.
Still interested in the outcome.

You can get thin insulated glazing units, although not sure about their availability in NZ. A nz is such a small market some companies have market dominance so only stock a small range of products, meaning a lack of choice. But you maybe able to import them.

I don't necessarily want the double glazed windows for their heat qualities but for the noise insulating as the street can get a bit noisy.

Also, due to their age, they will require more and more (expensive) maintenance so I might as well replace them completely. The tricky part is that the new ones must (and it's not negotiable) look identical to the existing ones.

You can buy 'hush' glass, which I think is a lot thinner. But I think council requires people to have double glazing in many places in NZ. But you maybe able to get a combo.

Hmm.. definitely looks very interesting. I'm not familiar with the term hush but it seems to be the same as laminated glass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laminated_glass)

and it's spot on
The PVB interlayer also gives the glass a much higher sound insulation rating, due to the damping effect, and also blocks 99% of incoming UV radiation.

Good stuff, I'll look into it. Thanks.

Where are you located? I have a client/friend here in Auckland who wanted to replicate classic double-hung sash windows with new wooden frames and double glazing in a major renovation of their villa. They got it done by Bungalow & Villa, who did an excellent job. Coincidentally I was just discussing this with him at lunchtime today.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I'm in Grey Lynn so relatively close to them. I'll give them a call. Thanks.

Also try dandos. They made a bunch of new wooden windows and french doors for me to fit a 90 year old bungalow (but not double glazed). Good reputation. http://www.dando.net.nz/
