I ended up using ThermalFrame, a PVC window/door place, for a window, and I plan to use them again in future. I don't know if they do sliding doors, but they'd be worth checking out, as would other PVC places. PVC doesn't conduct heat like aluminium, so much better heat insulation. They have windows over 30 years old still looking good, which is a concern for some people. Read their FAQ.
timmmay: I talked to a few aluminium door companies in Wellington, without exception I found them lazy, slow to visit, slow to quote, and difficult to deal with. Of the three who I asked for quotes only one even bothered to send them through. I ended up using ThermalFrame, a PVC window/door place, for a window, and I plan to use them again in future. NB: I'm not associated with any door/windows company, just reporting my experience.
kiwitrc: Modern aluminium windows have a thermal break layer to stop thermal transfer (not sure if they all do).
