Hi thinking of getting house lot of carpet but not sure whether to get solution dyed nylon, the hippo one (not sure what that is) or wool.

Will get the best underlay possible also. From memory 12mm with 140 weight.

Anyone got any recomendations?

Look at rubber underlay instead of foam. Not sure if it's practical in NZ, but could be softer and last longer. Carpet cleaning with those big machines full of water wouldn't soak into it.

I have solution dyed nylon, I like it. Apparently more fade and stain resistant. Don't get the thinnest one, get the medium - thick would be a bit crazy. We've had ours down a year or so and its still good and soft, and will probably bounce back even more once it's cleaned properly. The room that we don't use much is definitely softer.

No idea about the hippo one.

I walked on the Smartstrand Silk and it felt pretty nice. I think that's the Rhino one. I don't know if it's any good though!

Ditto on underlay. With our new build we upgraded to 10mm underlay not knowing there is 10mm and there is 10mm. Turned out the foam underlay is made from recycled plastic and in a few places they had to lift the carpet to remove hard bits. We thought it was the concrete floor that was not cleaned before carpet laying. Definitely next time will go for rubber and I like the idea of 12mm+. Our 10mm with loop pile wool is nice but not as soft as I had hoped. I've also decided carpet wears out and will be replaced after 10-15 years, it should be considered a consumable.

Different carpets wear better than others, and generally the more expensive ones should last longer. I like wool carpets, and they are fairly durable. However they did get a bad rep about 10 years ago, as many got eatten by a bug that come over from ovreseas. New wool carpets should now have chemicals to stop this. Not sure where a loop or cut pile lasts longer, but cut pile does shade. Some top quality carpets should last decades. I have a pure wool loop carpet and is 15 years old. It is show some wear, but it also got eatten by this bug around the edges. I think it is a case of getting what you pay for. .

go for solution dyed nylon every time. we used a mix last time and it faded badly and got those weird track marks that werent actually track marks. we are about to build a new house and have picked a luxurious solution dyed nylon that is so thick that a standard underlay is fine..

smartstrand stuff looks pretty great and has a good warranty. No fade and doesn't end up with marks from furniture.

The silk stuff is really dear, but the normal smartstrand is pretty decent when on special.

Two carpet places actually warned us off wool (and they do sell it) - fades quicker and doesn't last as long.

I think getting advice from carpet layers is better, as carpet stores will often try to sell you a product where they make the best margin. Layers pull up old carpet and lay new stuff, so they know their stuff, and what should last.

We just spent the last 2 months going through the options. In the end we went with Stylex Malt and we dealt with Ross at Carpet Extreme. I would give our price a 10/10 having shopped around fairly extensively, and our laying experience and after sales service as a 9/10 with a point dropped because our minor points took 6 weeks for someone to come out, though to be completely fair it was over the xmas/new year period and lots of people were on holiday. I can say we had very high expectations and they were met by Ross and his team.

We got 12mm underlay and don't regret the relatively minor additional cost.
