Spotted these last time I was in Bunnings - they seem well made, put out 750lm (12W - little on the high side for that output) and seem pretty cheap at just under $30 each. Has any of the Geekzone hive mind installed them?

Bought some. Not installed yet.

Typical Chinese driver with stupid small terminals but the dimmable one comes with flex and a plug so add a cheap j box and it's not too bad.

Dimming was flakey on my vintage Kambrook plug in dimmer but I did just try 1 and not all 8 that are going in so below suggested minimum load.

Also no 4000k option. Just orange and blue ones which means I will still be spending more on the ones that matter inside.

Excuse my ignorance, but how are these supposed to be wired in?
Do you need a whole lot of power outlets wired into your ceiling space, so you can plug each downlight module into?

Currently our house has a bunch of halogen downlights, with dimmable transformers, which are wired directly to power.
And soon we are having an extension built, hence interested in these dimmable LED downlights, which should also work with our existing PDL 624 trailing edge dimmers.

One-for-one replacement for recessed R80 reflector bulb holders, and work with common dimmer switches. And, you can lay pink batts right over the top of them

A plug is put on them so that they can be sold in some aussie states easier, since then they technically can be self installed.

I will get some pics later while I am looking for a couple of old routers.

I get the feeling that the trailing lead with 3 point plug will be to get around strict wiring regs in Australia, and everyone who buys them will unwire the flex and connect it to their existing wiring,

So by having a 3 pin plug Bunnings can wave their hands and say they are designed to be pluged in ( which is legal for a DIYer to do)

So its not their problem.

I am guessing if they didn't have a 3 pin plug, they would be pretty difficult to sell to your normal home handyman. Otherise they would have to sell them trade. But really a downlighter needs to be properly wired in. The expense along of having hotpoints wired into the ceiling space would probably outway any saving you make on the fitting.

And I suspect over 99% would be wired in, its just that it is Illegal to do that as a DIY job in many parts of Australia, so Bunnings could not easily sell such a downlight to the public that they could not install...

By having the DIYer remove the flex and install them, Bunnings skip any Liability if the "Electrical wiring police" come looking

And sockets are really common above drop cielings as well.

See the cord and plug on philips downlights as well.

An unswitched standard outlet is only $4 or $5 when I last had to get some for an extractor fan, so if they fit those and then the homeowner can swap out without a repeat visit then its a win/win, and I expect that many 4/6 way powerstrips get stuffed into cielings to power even more downlights since the spec built houses are always underlit because of BS efficiancy laws limiting watts per square meter of house in AU

These are still my favourite, bought more than 30 of 4000K neutral white and works perfectly. 14W model is as good as a 100W incandescent pendent light.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Have left a couple of the 12w ones on for a couple of days to see how hot they get.

Quite warm to the touch, they dim a lot better with an incandesant lamp on the dimer as well, so once I get some proper dimming gear they should be all good when installed. They are very bright so I dont know if I will install them in the eaves till I get the cbus gear. Will take 5 or so to my cousins to try on his test cbus setup and see how the perform on the different dimmers.
